Trapper’s has the honor of being the best over-priced place on the main drag in Waterton.
I mean that as a compliment, given that you have captive customers searching for something to eat in the morning, afternoon, and night.
Waterton is over-priced as it is. But there is far worse on that street than Trapper’s. Seriously. Far, far worse. Some of it slides out of a bag, ready to be deep-fried. Most of it barely passes muster as standard fare at a stand at your local rink.
And it kinda’ makes me sad (in that ‘I am reviewing a place that will continue to do what it does no matter what I say’ sorta’ way). You have an ironically great ambience (faux mountain mixed with cheesy, store bought, humor). Your seasonal servers are almost always wonderfully attentive. Location? Corner of the main drag with all the people passing by. And you have good food. But your portions are lousy. You have a solid selection of options. But your prices are stupidly out of sync (and I get that prices have gone up; still, your prices have always been out of sync with what you actually put on a plate). Again, what you serve is good. It is just that it still feels like you are gouging your guests because you offer the best options in a place that has limited offerings beside you for this sort of fare (aside from the monopoly on all things to everyone across the street . . . . wink, wink).
And it kinda’ makes me sad (in that ‘When you are a hostage are you going to choose to eat a wet sponge or a small steak?’ sorta’ way). Thing is, I give you credit. You won’t change. Because you don’t have to change. But I wish you were as customer oriented as your servers. You could actually lower food costs and increase profits it you wanted to do so, and I say that as someone who knows. Even now. Really. Buy. You. Won’t. Again, why would you. These are tourists. And that is part of the problem.
Who’s the fool? Me. Why? I will be back again next summer. Why? Where else am I going to go? And that isn’t even faint praise. Come on. Try harder.
And, finally, note that I gave you the rating that I gave you. It speaks to where you are and what you are and are...
Read moreGreat value, great food, great service, great hospitality. We loved Trappers! The meals were all delicious and the service was so very efficient (as was the kitchen!) and the hosts were very welcoming. The first night, my gluten-free, pizza-loving family member ordered the GF pepperoni pizza and a Caesar salad. They loved the pizza - and was actually able to take home half for breakfast and lunch the next day. The Caesar salad looked beautifully fresh. I had the blue cheese burger which was perfectly cooked along with its french fries, bean and coleslaw. I also had a glass of draft cider which was so refreshing! Our first experience was so awesome overall, we came back for dinner a second night ... and had the ribs/chicken wings combo as well as the fish and chips. Both came with french fries, coleslaw and beans. The ribs and chicken wings were smoked and came with extra BBQ sauce which was all quickly devoured. (No leftovers this time! :-) and my fish and chips were everything I hoped for - crisp, battered fish and those great french fries. Coleslaw was delicious and the beans were extraordinary. (I think I could have just those beans for dinner, they were that good.) Breakfast was our final meal and we both had the eggs/sausage/AWESOME spuds - and again they were able to accommodate my GF family member with a toasted GF bun while I had the whole wheat toast. Each and every time, our servers were knowledgeable and accommodating - and so very efficient. The food was uniformly excellent and even though the restaurant was busy during all of our visits, our meals were promptly whipped up and served. Finally - an extra special note - during one of the dinner visits - even though the restaurant was super busy - Deb took the extra effort and time to let me now when a table would be available so that we did not have to wait! Can't say enough about the quality of the restaurant and their hospitality. So great! Thanks for feeding us...
Read moreI will preface this review by saying I have been going to waterton for 15 years and have eaten at Trappers each time. My family has always recieved great service, food and friendly staff. Today I visited with my extended family which includes my toddler and my 5 month old. As babies do, mine had a blowout at the table. I always carry an extra large changing pad and lysol wipes. I took my son to the women's washroom and there was no changing table or place to change him. I checked with a server to confirm first if there was a changing table she said no. I then asked where I could change him, perhaps on the carpet in the back (noting there were no tables/people even close to that area and it was right beside the bathrooms), the server nicely said I could use the table in the back. So I did. I changed my son and got his new sleeper on. Just as I'm finishing the owner of the establishment comes up, extremely angry, saying this is a restaurant and this is a table for eating. I agreed and apologized but said you don't have a changing table for me to use. She snaped back we don't have one of those here. I told her I asked a server and she said this was ok. At this point I am so embarassed and everyone is staring at me. She rolled her eyes and walked away. I wiped the table with lysol wipes (my son never touched the table) and took my son back to the table. Everyone was still staring and I felt so ashamed and humiliated. I ended up leaving with my son and not eating breakfast. I know it's not regulation to have changing tables at restaurants but considering this is a family run establishment I would think they would have some consideration for parents of...
