As a Super Fan of Happy Gardens, till its end time, i was more than excited to continue the legacy of what i affectionately recall as astounding cuisine. Unfortuneately, this was not the case on my visit to the Green Onion Cake Man restaurant. The atmosphere is interesting, with an eclectic mix of Asian garden meets Castle decor, meets elevator music. Tea is not complimentary, but $$ per pot. I focused on ordering my old go to's off the menu ... Green Onion Cake, MuShu Pork, and Szechuan Beef. The Onion cake was light, crispy and flavourful. The Mushu a bit heavily laden with cabbage, and the pancake a bit stiff, but still reminiscent of the Mu Shu dish of the past. My biggest disappointment was the Schezuan Beef. The order was half the original size, complimented with rice instead, and $$$. The pieces were crispy, but dry and flavourless. Some sauce lingered at the base of the bowl. I have come to realize the dish that i had hoped to rediscover is long gone, buried with the bustle, popularity, and divine dishes of the...
Read moreWe did a pickup of one order each of hot'n'sour soup, Pad Thai and Singapore noodles (plus a package of green onion cakes, for later). Be advised that the entrees are sold complete and cooked, but frozen, so they need some nuking (the soup) and stir-frying before eating. The store provided a small insulated bag, which was very generous but probably not necessary since the food needs to be defrosted! Two of us split the soup and the Singapore noodles. Both were delicious, and copious. The soup had just the right balance of hot and sour, and there was plenty of tofu and wood mushrooms. The noodle dish was quite generous with ingredients, and the included spice mix was very tasty. I chose to cook the spice mix in a bit of oil first, and added maybe 1/3 cup water to the stirfry. Seemed to work ok. Altogether a good taste experience, and fantastic value for money. ...
Read moreMy friends and I went to the green onion cake man café on Tuesday. August the 22nd. 2023. I ordered a green onion cake and it wasn't too bad and wasn't that great. And I ordered the hot and sour chicken soup. And it was terrible.! It didn't even have one piece of chicken in it. How can you call it a hot and sour chicken soup when you don't include chicken? There was no broth, It was just gelatin. Too much vinegar, not balanced properly. Yuck! I couldn't eat it and just left it. Plus, I couldn't believe how expensive most of the items were on the menu. One item, $16 another item, $18 I might as well just go to a buffet. Pay a little bit more and get 12 to 20 items. My friends and I each said that we'd never go back there ever again. Such Terrible food. Yuck!
