I've been away a long time but returned to find it isn't what it used to be. Fish (and chips) was quite good, and burgers were tasty but the rest left something to be desired. The burgers still taste like they are home made and the grilled onions are a nice addition but the chicken burger wasn't very good, we didn't finish either of them. The onion rings were so-so, appeared to be out of a freezer and into a deep fryer, and the clam strips were terrible. They were the same type of little breadded nubs you buy frozen in the grocery store. Not impressed at all. Pop fountains are serve yourself and some kind of a robotic all in one machine that was confusing, and the condiments had to be requested at the counter in small disposable packages which were rationed out. The ketchup was a self serve dispenser but the small paper cups were also rationed out from behind the counter. I get cost cutting, but dine-in customers could use squirt bottles on the tables. Trying to dip a piece of tasty golden battered fish into a tiny foil/plastic pack of tarter sauce definitely takes away from the meal. I think some small simple changes could vastly improve the overall experience but i wont be back as it is. They seem to be resting on their laurels depending on reputation and long time customers, not seducing people with delicious fresh made food quality of ingriedients, or competative prices. Our bill was $50 for 4 people and we left unsatisfied. The only redeeming part was that the staff was friendly...
Read moreOkay - so today I had a book signing at the Sunnyside Mall's Indigospirit. It's a lovely little bookstore and I always do fairly well and sell a few books but rarely a whole lot.
So why do I bother going there?
In one word the Chickenburger.
All right, so that was two words. Three if you count "chicken" and "burger" separately. Which I do. I count "chicken" separate from "burger" because it is a burger that I am usually aiming for. A cheeseburger, with fries and a coffee milkshake. That is my go-to meal and the folks at the Chickenburger, whether you are counting one or two or THREE words, never let me down.
Today I was tempted to try something different. I tried an Oktoberfest burger.
Wow.
So what's an Oktoberfest burger?
Let's start with a burger patty - made out of honest-to-moo beef. None of that "you-can't-believe-that-it's-plankton" foolishness for me. If I want a burger, I want it with meat. I am a working class carnivore.
Then put that patty on a pretzel bun and top it with crisp raw onions, pickles, mustard and helping of sauerkraut.
Holy oompapa, Batman.
I was pleased with the Oktoberfest burger. I am ALWAYS pleased with the fries and the milkshake.
What can I tell you?
I give The Chickenburger every star in my pocket and I can't wait until I go...
Read moreWent to chicken burger for the first time tonight. Ordered for myself my wife and kids. Got 4 chicken burgers 2 orders of fries, a strawberry milkshake and one of their new Dole sorrbet desserts(I ordered raspberry) to go. The order cost $32 and change. The cashier didn't know how to use the till properly and had to keep asking for help from other co-workers. They attempted to send me off without the sorrbet and when I noticed I asked for it. The young lady now helping me didn't know how to use the machine and just stood there staring at it for a few minutes. I waited patiently only to find out they didn't have it after I already paid. They offered me a pineapple flavour instead. I accepted and after another few minutes of figure out how to use it she produced a bowl of aorrbes and a spoon. As my order was to go and I was travelling alone I asked for a lid. I was told by the young lady that they didn't have lids for their styrofoam bowls. Not wanting to take anymore time here I left and carefully placed it on my passenger seat, uncovered. When I got home my family started eating and immediately noticed that the fries as well as the meat inside the "burger" were very cold. I will not be returning to this location despite its reputation. Quite...
