Things don’t get any more old school than Hon’s. There’s a good reason why they’ve been in business over 30 years… if you’re looking for Chinese comfort food, they have things nailed down pat.
Over the years, they’ve opened and closed various locations but the thing that they haven’t changed is how tasty their gyoza are. I had a hankering for gyoza for a while so I headed over to their New West location on 6th Street in mid-June and ordered their Lunch Set ($9.45) which includes an order of shrimp and pork wun tun as well as 6 pieces of your choice of pot stickers (I opted for pork).
You can customize your noodles and I went with the wide egg noodles. The wun tun noodle soup was pretty much what you expect… nothing out of the ordinary here.
What I did really enjoy here were the pot stickers. They had the perfect amount of charring on one side of the pot sticker which gave it a nice crispy edging. These are really classic.
Looking to skip the carbs one day, I decided to double-down on some BBQ items and ordered the BBQ Meat Platter ($12.95 for 2 types). I opted for the BBQ Pork and BBQ Duck. This dish is exactly as it sounds… just plain bbq meat (you can add rice on the side). To be honest, this was quite basic and not really on par with places that specialize in BBQ meats. The pork was on the tougher side but the duck was a bit better. Probably better off going to a local Chinese butchery instead.
If you’re looking for some old school Asian comfort food, Hon’s delivers.
Update May 2022: I hadn't been back to this place for a while. Since that time, they've changed their name to Han Lin. No worries though cause they still have solid pot stickers and a menu with a wide range of options. The Singapore vermicelli lunch special was generous in portion size and really...
Read moreMy family and I have been frequenting Han Lin – formerly known as Hon’s – since before I was even born. This place has become part of my family’s story. Ever since I was a baby, my uncle, my aunt, my grandma, everybody would come together just to meet at this Hon’s. (Or the Chinatown location).
When I heard the other locations were shutting their doors, I felt a huge pang in my heart at the thought of losing that tradition. Then, when I realized this one was staying open, I felt such joy. Even though we also went to the Chinatown one, finding out that the employees pooled their money and bought the New West location filled me with profound happiness.
It’s not just the food or the people—I fully understand what people mean when they said a place “feels like home.” I don’t think people truly grasp what impact a restaurant like this has on you. It’s not just a restaurant—it’s thousands of memories: me and my sister fighting at the table when we were kids, scattered snapshots of growing up together.
If you haven’t been to this restaurant, do yourself a favor and go. It’s the most amazing place you’ll ever visit, and it just reminds me of home now. It’s so ingrained in my life—I don’t even think any word can explain it except “home.”
If you go (which you should), please tip generously. The staff are truly amazing—remarkable.
I’ve never once had a bad experience in almost 26 years.
Get the house special chow mein, curry brisket with rice, BBQ pork noodle soup, crispy squid… and their famous potstickers. Those are just a few of my family’s favourites.

Read moreI have been going to Hon's for years. Since the renovating, the food has been terrible. Went in today August 15, 2016 and "whoa" down hill is the only way to describe my experience. The young Waiter came up after receiving the menu 30 seconds prior and said " hate to pressure you, but have you decided". I said" um yeah, I just opened the menu I need a couple minutes please". He stood a few tables away staring at me with his arms crossed. Anyway after we ordered the beef and broccoli on chowmein done crispy. The noodles were still raw and not up to the quality of a few years ago the sauce was extremely runny. The onion cake was also under cooked. The pork gyoza smelt off, has a slight garbage smell. Even the har gow was not as steamed as usual. Then I noticed all the staff and cooks sit at one table with piping hot, steaming food.. Now I know why we were very rushed. The attitude of the waiter was terrible. The nice lady that used to serve us was collecting dishes. Ordered it as take out a few weeks ago and had the same issue with quality. The BBQ sliced pork was 60% fat, It was cold as well. The Shanghai XO noodles are terrible now as well. Used to be my favorite. Even the chilli oil is different. It's not aged anymore. Time to step up to kirin madarin , although it's pricey. Won't be going back to Hon's for a long time. At least they cleaned the parking lot, there was garbage everywhere a few weeks ago. I'm starting to question if they...
