WOW this cook really knows how to cook each dish. The fish and chips were out of this world…Simply the BEST fish and chips I’ve ever had! Overall, I was thoroughly impressed with Harry’s Fish and Chips commitment to serving high-quality, sustainable seafood. They use quality ingredients and you can really taste the difference. The batter was perfectly crispy, providing that satisfying crunch with every bite and the batter wasn’t too heavy.
The fish (cod and halibut) was tender and flaky inside, with a satisfyingly crisp and golden-brown batter on the outside. It was clear that the fish had been freshly prepared, contributing to its succulent texture. The chips were perfectly golden and fluffy. You can't have the fish and chips without their homemade tartar sauce…it’s insanely good! The onion rings had a crisp coating and were fried to golden perfection. The mushy peas and curry sauce were so flavourful and a great accompaniment to the fish and chips. The flavors and textures of both created a satisfying contrast. The chicken wings created a flavour explosion with every bite. Their battered mushrooms are coated in a light and crispy batter, creating a satisfying crunch with every bite. The New York cheesecake was a slice of pure comfort - rich, creamy, and just the right amount of indulgence.
This place is a perfect place to get the best crispy, delicately battered, fried fish in town, period. The staff provided outstanding service—attentive, friendly, and always ensuring we had everything we needed. They made us feel truly welcomed and taken care of. Their professionalism, warmth, and dedication to exceptional service truly stood out. Such a hidden gem for fish and chips. We were truly wowed by the high standard...
Read moreThe food gets 5 stars while the service was very slow.
I do NOT like fish and chips. Honestly, I think the vast majority of fish and chips are bland and rather sad. However, anything made well can overturn that sweeping generalization. And I am proud to say that of all the fish and chips I've had that Harry's is worth it. The fish is perfect. I highly recommend the haddock. The batter is thin, crispy, well seasoned. Not too oily. The chips are great. The tartar sauce is excellent.
The curry sauce was very disappointing. It tastes like some cheap powdered Curry sauce and I feel if they put the same love into it as the rest of the stuff, it would be a knock out. But most importantly, Harry's does what a fish and chips place should do well.... The fish and the chips. Having eaten fish and chips on white rock, steveston, Granville Island, Melbourne and across numerous other places, the batter is always too thick so it gets soggy quick or overpowers the fish or is thick and soaked with oil and grease or it is just plain underseaoned which often seems to be the case in The Vancouver area. An aversion to seasoning. Harry's gets it right.
It took almost 40 mins to get food while there were only 4 other tables there so that is a negative and they never checked on us to say that the food was going to take a while. So the girl working the front should have been a little more proactive. We happened to be in a particularly patient mood that day so we waited without...
Read moreI still miss Uncle Herbert’s in Ladner, so when I spotted Harry’s with the British flag on the sign I was keen to go. It’s hard to find authentic British-style fish and chips here anymore.
The service was really good and the prices were decent. Had I ordered just the fish and chips, I probably would have given a better review, however, the cod was very watery even though I liked the batter. The chips were also decent, cut smaller than British chips but normal for Canada. I loved that they kept malt vinegar right at the table.
Unfortunately, the mushy peas were blah, as was the coleslaw. We also ordered a chicken pie and a steak pie, and were very disappointed in them. The chicken pie had a hint of curry flavour but was otherwise very boring and not what I expected. The steak pie was full of organ meats, which I would have completely avoided had I thought to ask (most places here would adequately label the item with that information). The pies were not made in-house - the server actually referenced that they came from a box. It seemed like everything was pre-packaged, processed food. Most disappointing was the tartar sauce, which had been made from salad cream - it tasted like Miracle Whip, basically.
I know British food gets a bad rap for being bland and unhealthy. No one is going to a place like this for a healthy meal. But done the right way, all these foods can be delicious. Harry’s won’t be seeing me again. What was good wasn’t good enough to warrant...
