UPDATE: Kam Fung, owned by Mr. Kwan, used to be the best dim sum in town, bar none. I went there for the first time in 1982 (in Chinatown) and continued for decades.
When Mr. Kwan's daughter, Veronica, opened the Brossard restaurant, I started to go there, since I live on the South Shore. The quality of the food and service were consistently a 9/10, whether dim sum or the Szechuan meals on offer.
A few months ago, the restaurant changed hands. I didn't know this. However, when I ordered take-out dinner for four last Saturday (which came to a whopping $200+ before tax or tip), I realized something was wrong. The flavours of the dim sum appetizers (har gow, shu mai, Chinese chive dumplings, etc.) were bland. The usually succulent crab ball was rubbery and tasteless. The Hunan dumplings with peanut sauce had almost no peanut sauce on them. We didn't bother to eat them. The shu mai was meh.
We also ordered the Combo Menu A. Replacing the pork chop with the scallops with crispy spinach now cost an extra $9. The General Tao chicken was all crust, no chicken. The ginger beef, which was previously always perfectly velvetized, was hard and chewy. The whole meal was utterly substandard.
Add to that the fact that the portion sizes have been reduced (probably an environmental bonus, since there was less to throw out). I noted the change from the larger black containers to the smaller white ones.
I called Kam Fung to speak with Mr. Kwan, convinced he would not deliberately sell such inferior food in smaller quantities at a jacked-uo price. Imagine my surprise - NOT! - when I discovered that the restaurant had changed hands.
This once outstanding restaurant is following in the footsteps of many other excellent Montreal-area restaurants that fell by the wayside when new owners took over: the new management cut corners by decreasing quantities, lowering the quality, increasing prices for the new inferior product and not caring one whit about retaining loyal customers.
I, for one, will not return.
It makes you wonder how long Kam Fung will manage to survive. It's such a shame.
[TWO YEARS AGO] Not only the absolutely best dim sum in Montreal, but also the best combination meals. Try A and B for two (will let you substitute). The pics for A and B are attached. You also get AMAZING won ton or hot...
Read moreI hate to leave mediocre reviews for any restaurant, especially in post pandemic times when restaurants are struggling to survive. However, when the restaurant is mediocre that is what I feel compelled to. The Cantonese chow mein comes out as the hugest portion I have ever seen served in a Chinese restaurant, but when you dig into it you realize it’s just noodles and Napa cabbage. It is covered in an obscene quantity of sauce there are very few vegetables or meats of any kind in it. We also had the General Tao chicken which was the best thing we ordered. The tofu with mixed vegetables was eaten only because we were very hungry but it had hardly any tofu in it and was generally lackluster, again drowning in a starchy sauce. The Chinese broccoli was decent . I it Hass to be said that the price of around $80 is pretty low for a restaurant these days but if the quality is not there, you still walk away feeling you’ve paid too much. With a little bit more skill and attention in the kitchen all of these issues could’ve been fixed. The plate was dirty when I sat down and I asked them to change it because it had some sticky substance all over it. My son also found a small fly in his food something like a fruit fly. This morning I feel weighed down as if we ate a lot of MSG and starch last night. I was not happy with this place at all and I really feel they should be...
Ça a l'air bon !
ENGLISH VERSION...
I looked at the photos and it appealed to me. It seemed like a real Chinese restaurant worthy of the name. I had also seen the show “Curieux Bégin”. In short, I couldn't wait. What a desappointment. I wanted to try food I've never had because I wanted to eat REAL authentic food.
I want to try mushroom soup and I was advised against it. Too long, I am told; Well, I want to try a Yu Djian style pork dish (not sure of the name)....I'm told that according to her it's so-so.....in short, I end up with a sour soup and spicy and another pork dish with XO sauce....I also have spicy garlic eggplant.
Next to us, a large table of Chinese people are eating. They are served in large serving dishes. It looks good ! Our dishes arrived, my wife had the Cantonese lobster, and all these dishes were in black plastic dishes....soup included! Unbelievable ! An hour wait in total and everywhere.
My pork was actually served with broccoli in such large pieces that you had to cut it into several smaller pieces before eating it; the eggplants were good but that was all he had; no other vegetables (onions, carrots, etc.) The lobster was OK but nothing more. The soup was good but served in a transparent plastic dish.
In short, the whole thing gave me the impression that we had come for a take-out, and that they were in a hurry to see us leave.
Meanwhile, our friends at the main table were served properly.
How can you be so poorly served? I had the impression that we were the lackeys of the big table and that it was therefore normal that we could not eat in good conditions.
Shame and humiliation. Never again. I strongly advise against this restaurant. They serve musketeers' food there, treating you like their lackeys.
They won't see me...
