I've eaten delivery from Grand Chinese Restaurant a bunch in the past and it was fine, but this delivery order didn't live up to expectations. We had:

N9. Beijing Sauce Noodles - Zha-Jiang Mian (北京炸醬麵) Blade-Shared Noodles I've ordered jjajangmyeon a bunch recently (mostly from Korean places) and this was the most disappointing I've encountered. The sauce wasn't very flavourful or sweet. However, my son liked it and it wasn't spicy.

N10. Dan Dan Noodles (擔擔麵) Hand-Dragged Noodles These were good. Sauce was not very nutty, flavourful and enjoyable. Somewhat spicy. I liked the chew of the noodles too.

C4. Northern Curry Chicken (咖喱鸡丁) A bit of spice but pretty boring. I was disappointed because curry is usually so safe. My family liked it more than I did. I added grated ginger which made it more interesting.

C8. General Tso's Chicken (左中棠鸡) Was okay. You get chicken, some broccoli, and lots of sliced dried chilies. Pretty spicy. Texture isn't great after delivery, because it's breaded chicken and it had grown very soft in the sauce. (Compare to Korean fried chicken places which vent their delivery containers and it's still crispy.) Leftovers are nice to snack on.

D11. Green Onion Flat Bread (蔥油餅) Free item!

Total was $74 plus tax, tip, delivery, etc. had a ton of leftovers. That was probably enough food for 6-8 people.

Everything spicy was too spicy for my kids, but since I was disappointed in flavours Id be wary of asking for no spice if...

Be warned: the level of spice is higher than your generic Chinese food joint. This place has so much potential, but it ended up being quite disappointing. I will break down my meal piece by piece.

Ambience: Mediocre. Very generic. You can see the kitchen making dumplings live, which is pretty cool.

Service: Mediocre. Got tea refilled often, and food got on the table super fast.

Food: Hovers between mediocre and above average. Hot and Sour Soup: Not too bad. Plenty of fixings inside. Soup is quite spicy and tastes too much of vinegar. Xi'an steamed noodle: Not bad either. The sauce is quite thick and isn't what i'm used to. Very spicy. Baby Bak-choy and Shitake mushroom: Mediocre. I like the bak-choy still had its crunch. Porkbelly Stew (red stewed meat): Biggest disappointment in the night, considering it was listed on Chef's Recommendation, so I had high hopes for it. There was a general lack of flavour in the sauce, and the sauce didn't render that beautiful red glaze that's signature of this dish. Meat was in giant chunks, and could be cooked for much longer to give it a soft and tender texture. I think the basic ingredient of all the flavours were there though, they just need...

Seriously disappointed. Off to a good start it seemed and then a major f-up. I make a delivery order through their website on a Wednesday night, wait for an hour and 15 minutes (having been promised 45) and call to cancel when I lose my patience. What do you know. The first thing the manager does is place the blame with me, suggesting I placed the order through a wrong website. Yeah, thanks a lot, I've ordered pick-up before, I know what website to use. Next thing I find out - they can't even see my order, and that's after I get a confirmation email with order number. Here's my suggestion - if you can't offer a reliable online order system, don't offer the option at all. Lost me as a customer and I used to come a lot. Plus the almost 3 dollar surcharge when you want to pay online with credit card - are you effing serious? Acquiring doesn't cost you nowhere near us much, so don't try to turn a profit on this at your customers' expense, or be upfront and say - we...

Hidden Gem in Burnaby: This Sichuan Spot Has Amazing Soup Dumplings!

We were so desperate to find a decent place for spicy food after our favored Hunan restaurant closed permanently due to high cost of rental. We then found this Szechuan restaurant. This one offers a very wide range of Chinese food including soup, stir fried dishes, steamed buns and such. It may benefit many locals who want to experience taste of China, and for those who are experts in spicy food, this place might need more qualification because the chiefs are mostly Cantonese. My girlfriend often wonders why Cantonese who do not usually eat spicy food opened Szechuan restaurants, and my answer is that Cantonese cooks are very skillful and flexible. Our food this time did not have much spiciness as they were worried about local people’s tolerance, so we might go again for some possible real deals.

My bestie introduced me to this gem. We specifically came here for their $13.95 lunch special which included soup of the day. I didn’t like the tomato egg swirl soup. We both ordered the beef chow fun and Xiaolongbao. Both dishes were tasty and the noodle dish was a big portion. Noodles weren’t greasy. Great value! Service was decent. My bestie comes here regularly both for lunch & dinner. The best value is their lunch special. It’s a challenge finding free parking out front as there are a limited spots. They’re located in the mini shopping plaza next to Petro Canada gas station off Willingdon & Lougheed. Steps from Brentwood Mall. I’ll be back!
