After a horrible experience at Chop Steakhouse in Kelowna many many many years ago, I finally decided to give this location a try. I no longer wanted to let a past experience prevent me from trying this location. And I was craving steak.
Our party of 3 went here for dinner on a Saturday night and it was not too crowded but not empty either. Our server, Elsa patiently and expertly went over the menu with us. We ordered the Steamed Mussels summer special as an appetizer, and then ordered the following entrees: prime rib with mashed potatoes (and gravy), Flat Iron Steak with fries, and Filet Mignon with cauliflower rice. All entrees also came with seasonal veggies of rainbow carrots and zucchinis.
The Steamed Mussels: OMG those were probably the best mussels I have had in a long time. Large chunks of garlic, the creamy wine sauce...the only down side was not enough break to soak up the sauce!
The Prime Rib: very good size and tender. Downside was that the "au jus" was more like a gravy in consistency, and was poured all over the prime rib. My husband would have preferred it on the side. The mashed potatoes were delicious and did not need the gravy. HOWEVER, when gravy was added to the mashed potatoes, the flavour reminded me of those Hungryman TV dinners. (Oh, sweet childhood memories!). I didn't mind it. My husband said he could have done without the gravy as the mashed potatoes were pretty good own their own.
The Flat Iron Steak: My father said it was tender and not chewy as he was afraid it would be (we had been forewarned that it's not the most tender of steaks). He ordered the steak done to Medium doneness and it was good.
The Filet Mignon: I ordered it "medium" and it was done perfectly. I had had issues with steaks either coming out well done, or medium rare to rare in the past few steak outings at other places that i was so happy these guys got it right. The steak was perfectly seasoned. The cauliflower rice needed some salt and pepper and was okay.
For dessert, they had mini versions of the cheesecake and lemon creme brulee which was perfect as we did not have room for full sized desserts. My dad had the cheesecake and liked it. The creme brulee was delicious as well. Other restaurants really need to do mini versions along with their regular portion sizes for those of us who just can't take down a full dessert after a meal.
And the highlight of the evening was Elsa. She was very good at tending to us and humoured my husband's "dad jokes". When we ordered the mini desserts, he asked for a mini bill, and sure enough, when Elsa came back with the bill, she wrote "mini-bill" on it for him.
If you're wanting a casual night out for steak, I would highly recommend Chop Steakhouse. I have blocked the past Kelowna experience out of my head, and would gladly go back to the...
Read moreI was very disappointed when I went to Chop on Saturday night. I have gone there every month for the last year for at least once a week. Spending at least 130 dollars every time I go. I like my steak well done so the chief has come out and talked to me and has treated me so good. The steak has always been perfect. The chief that I am speaking of is Walter. On Saturday I was so disappointed. One because myself and Joni, my friend, are there so often and two because of the way I was treated on Saturday night. The steak was so tough that I could not bite into it and cut parts off and left them on my plate. I told the waitress and she apologized and asked if I wanted another steak. I told her no because I did not want to have to wait for another steak. In my opinion at that point a manager should have come and apologized and the steak should have been taken off the bill. Instead a manager by the name of Lauren came to the table and apologized but told me it was my fault because I ordered a well done steak. I tried to talk to her to explain that I come all the time and its perfect every other time but she was having no part of it. S he talked over top of me and would not listen. I finally said to her please do not do this to me because is pisses me off. She then said don't curse at me. That is the first time I every heard that pisses me off is a curse but hey that is an excuse to not listen. I had to repeat my self over and over again and finally she just walked away. We finished and the waitress asked if we wanted a desert which I said no as I am diabetic and I had enough sugar that day. The bill came with no compensation for anything. Not even I'll give you a free salad the next time your in. I guess the fact that we are great and loyal customers and the fact we come that many times a month and spend tons of money makes no difference to Lauren. She is more concerned about being right. I tried to find out who her manager was but not one person in there knew who to speak with and could not guide me in any direction. They gave me a card with Kyle on it . No last name . No number to call except main number. My view of this restaurant has changed dramatically after my last visit. I will not be...
Read moreHad a decent time with food that I probably wouldn't order again, but that's more on me than the restaurant. My notes: Starters: Ahi Tuna Tataki and the Escargot Stuffed Mushrooms. The Ahi Tuna was pretty good but I felt it lacked a bit of punch. A bit more lime probably would've done it for me. The julienne vegetable and edamame beans(?) as the base were pretty tasteless. The Escargot had a nice crisp bread crumb on top, but I felt were pretty bland and lacked flavour. Mains: Smoked Rib Eye with Loaded Mashed Potatoes and Top Sirloin with Garlic Shrimp and French Fries (Surf & Turf). The smoked rib eye seemed like a novel item, and it is, but it just isn't for me. The smoky flavour just isn't up my alley. That's not to say that it isn't good and wouldn't suit others well, just not me. The loaded mashed potatoes were quite good and didn't feel heavy at all, but I would've added more sour cream to help cut the heaviness of the steak, but that's a personal preference and I understand how difficult doing a template "loaded" potato dish can be considering how varied preferences can be across the board unless you're actually bringing out the tray of toppings to do it individually per customer preferences. The garlic shrimp were pretty good not nothing special, same with the top sirloin. A pretty basic surf and turf. The french fries were also very plain with no seasoning. *Special note, the peppercorn sauce is made with brandy in case there's an aversion to alcohol (alcohol is cooked off, but still). Desserts: Flourless Chocolate Torte and New York Cheesecake. The chocolate torte seemed pretty standard, nothing really stand out about it, but it was quite good. The cheesecake was also quite good, but it notes that it's supposed to be infused with ice wine and ginger and I couldn't taste either. Perhaps a little disappointed by that.
The server we had was a lovely lady that was friendly and helpful. It seemed that I had a few questions that she wasn't ready for, but not a big deal. Still great service and was...
