I would normally give this restaurant a four out of five stars but on this occasion my review is largely based on two things: food preparation of two dishes, and the attitude of the manager who answered the phone and failed to take my feedback on September 23, 2022.
I ordered the soya sauce chicken. I understand that the dish is not supposed to be warm, rather at room temperature, but this time food was very cold. It was as though it came out of the fridge without being warmed up at all. This dish also had so many bone shards that it was as though there were large pieces of sand or small pieces of rock in the dish. I also ordered beef and green bean in black bean sauce. This dish also had bone shards, but it shouldn’t have any bones at all. I understand that cutting the meats, especially chicken, may produce some fragments of bone. However, in this case the kitchen did not take much care in the way they cut the pieces.
I cracked a tooth as a result of biting down on one of the shards. What is worse is the way I was spoken to on the telephone when I called to give feedback.
The woman who took my call asked me for proof, asked me for pictures, and told me that I don’t know how to eat. I am Asian and so I think I know how to Asian food.
The purpose of my call was not to seek any compensation, rather to give feedback because I had planned to eat there again at some point in the future. However, I am reconsidering this given the way I was treated. My feedback was to advise that more care has to be given when kitchen staff...
Read moreAfter passing Emerald garden several times over the years we finally decided to stop in for dinner. Extremely impressed! A great take on Canadian Chinese with a good mix of traditional southern dishes. My partner and I ordered a curry fried rice, sweet and sour pork, salt and pepper squid, and a crispy chicken. I quite enjoyed the curry fried rice, the flavor was mild with a small touch of heat, the sweet and sour pork was surprisingly really good, the sauce was unique to other restaurants just the right amount of sweet with that touch of sour, the crispy chicken was average, to be honest the crispy chicken is a tough dish to pull off and other then the one restaurant in Edmonton I have yet to find another restaurant that beats it, lastly the star of the dishes we ordered would be the salt and pepper seafood mix, I have to say it might be my be favorite spit in torn, especially with silver inn closing I have been on the hunt to find another place capable of delivering a similar squid, I'm happy to report that emerald garden comes close, definitely recommend you order this if you get the chance, also the unannounced appetizer of Ginseng soup was a welcome treat on a cold night and the traditional sweet potato dessert was a welcome treat. Definitely recommend a stop at...
Read moreHard to beat the dumplings at Emerald Garden. My fiancee's family has been coming to and ordering from Emerald for about 20 or so years. Never has there been a lapse in service or food quality. The family that owns the restaurant is always kind, hospitable and helpful and the quality of the food is ALWAYS top notch. The deep fried pork dumplings are our favourite; they are doughy but savoury and also slightly crispy. It is a perfect dough to meat ratio and we'd argue they're some of the best in the city. Not only do they have a wide selection of Peking Chinese dishes, but they also have a selection of Portuguese fusion options, as well-- which I am sad to say I haven't tried yet, but plan to.
The restaurant's inner decor is definitely dated-- i.e: 80s/90s art deco style, but this doesn't detract from the amazing service offered by the wait staff (who treat you like family) and the fantastic hot and fresh food. This is one place we will continue to go back to and love.
Great recommendations/Our Favourites: Anything chicken cashew-- especially in yellow bean sauce Any of the hot plates and hot pots Thick shanghai fried noodle with mixed meat/vegetables Fried...
