We called ahead to reserve a table for two for All-You-Can-Eat (AYCE) on a weekday and ended up having the whole restaurant for ourselves (plus a handful of people coming for takeout orders/delivery). The manager/server was nice, attentive, helpful and the food came out reasonably quick. Green Salad was fresh and yummy. Seaweed salad was tasty but the order was way too #big for AYCE (1/3 of what was served would be more than enough). Tempura shrimps were light, crunchy, and the shrimps tasted smooth/fresh and perfectly cooked so we ordered quite a few of them! Tempura yam was good. Tempura avocado was just OK. Potato Cake was super yummy (manager was honest when asked in stating this is bought and not store-made) but I would rather have the sauce served on the side of the Potato Cake instead of having a bit too much sauce on it. Carrot Cake (well, store-made Tempura shredded carrot, to be more precise) was NOT tasty and I think simply Tempura thin slice of carrot (big carrot) will probably taste better than the Tempura shredded carrot. Agedasi Tofu wasn’t yummy to me at all and I won’t order it again. Nigiri Sushi regular and seared ones were all fresh and nice. I personally find the Tamago (egg) sushi sliced a bit too thin (can be 2x or 3x thicker than the one was served us) and the Tamago itself was looking/tasting a bit on the dry side. For AYCE, the rice on the Nigiri Sushi were just about right sizes and NOT made super big like some AYCE places want to stuff diners with rice. #NotCool For the Tonkotsu ramen , the soft boiled egg, thin sliced of pork, and bamboo shoot were all nice and yummy but the ramen soup (the soul of ramen to some) itself was way too salty (and probably has MSG too?) and hopefully can be made less salty (without MSG) in the future. Nice to have ice cream even they are probably the cheapest bulk buy big bucket ice cream. Ice cream is an easy item to please for AYCE. In closing, if Sushi 4 You can maintain (and even improve a little) its food quality on all the items it served and nice service for All-You-Can-Eat at a reasonable price (we paid $26.99 per person for lunch, increased from $20.99 a few months ago I read) we will go again. Over the months and years, far far too many AYCE places in Calgary we used to like ended up with progressively deteriorating food quality, jacked up prices too much and lost us as customers. I really hope Sushi 4 You can stay good on its food quality front and keep prices reasonable. Time will tell. Good luck to the Sushi 4 You team (and us diners who love good food at a...
Read moreThe WORST experience I've had at an AYCE restaurant. I couldn’t find anything about it that I would consider acceptable, yet the flaws are quite easy to list. I visited this place half a year ago, but my most recent experience left me confused and wondering what had happened.
Inconsistent Communication : There was only one other table occupied when we arrived, and we were a group of four. The waiter informed us that they weren’t busy that day, so there wouldn't be any limitations on our orders. However, during our third round, he suddenly told us we were out of time. We understood and mentioned that it would be our last order.
Unpleasant Food Quality : As a food lover, I have a great respect for the meals I receive. Unfortunately, this restaurant fell short. The tempura was over-fried and seemed to be cooked in reused oil, resulting in an unpleasant taste. Additionally, we often received our sashimi last, and many pieces were incredibly thin and small—almost translucent. Despite these issues, we tried to finish our orders out of respect for the service industry and our desire not to waste food.
Poor Service Attitude : As we were leaving, the staff insisted we pay for leftovers, which were just a piece of tempura avocado, one shrimp, and one piece of sushi. The situation escalated when the staff claimed he needed to show the leftovers to the manager before completing our payment. When we refused to pay for the extras, he became visibly upset and argued with us.
We decided to leave without leaving a tip to express our dissatisfaction and feeling of offense. The only positive aspect was the machine allowing us to choose the tip amount, which I thought was a good feature. However, the waiter accused us of not being appreciative of the kitchen staff. To me, that sentiment would be unfair to the many other restaurants that offer excellent and respectful service.
This experience raises questions about whether this treatment is specific to our group or reflective of their general approach to customers. It certainly explains why the restaurant had only six tables and yet remained nearly empty...
Read moreWe (2 people) heard great things about this AYCE sushi place and drove over 30 minutes to check it out. We came on Monday night at 7 pm, not during peak hours. We walked in and waited to be greeted for at least 2 minutes. An employee didn’t greet us, but sternly asked if we had a reservation, which we responded with “no”. (It was not indicated anywhere that one was needed) She then mumbled “give me a minute” and walked off to talk to her staff members. We were left confused and standing at the door for over five minutes until another staff member approached us and asked us again if we had a reservation. We responded with “no” as previously indicated, then she responded saying that they couldn’t take us due to “staffing shortages.” It didn’t seem to make much sense since there were 3 tables open, one as a result of a customer who just left. As someone who has worked over 2 years as a server in a small mom and pop restaurant, I was shocked by the lack of communication and unfriendly demeanour from the staff. We would greet the customers immediately upon their entrance and provide further information about accommodating their visit. Even if there were reservations and staffing shortages, we would ask them if they would be ok with a table but waiting longer for the food to be served. Overall, telling the customer to leave with nothing other than a insincere sorry even if there really is a staffing shortage (on a slow Monday night no less) is simply unacceptable. Although the shop was small and aesthetically pleasing, I wouldn’t go back because I don’t trust that they would serve me if I were to...
