I’ve been waiting to leave this review for almost a week.
I’ll preface this by saying- I was born in Mexico, a little while away from the City. My family relocated to Calgary when I was 6 years old. Calgary is my home, but I dream of home. I was fortunate enough to be raised by two excellent cooks.
My mother learned from her mom, and her 15 siblings, all of which could cook. My father studied ancient Mesoamerican recipes, he explored the expanses of Mexico in search of flavour. He is the founder of Sabores here in Calgary, and opened back when it was an award-winning food stall in the Kingsland Farmer’s Market (now a series of apartments).
Enough yapping- I was raised on their cooking. No matter what I go through in life, no matter what changes, no matter the joy or suffering, homemade Mexican food brings me back to when I was a child. That is EXACTLY what happened when I visited Tacos Mexico on Memorial.
I don’t like talking smack about the competition, but I feel its hard to do this place justice without doing it a little. Native Tongues in the SW had a great design, good service- the food feels like a pale imitation and far too overpriced. Almost $80 for a total of 6 small birria tacos, two drinks and some sauces. (This was at least 2 years ago, mind you.) Tacos Mexico on Macleod- doesnt compare.
THIS place is where it’s at. My date and I ordered: Chilaquiles. Menudo. We shared that. Tacos de lengua, de borrego, de pescado. I swear on my honour as a man- I was dancing the whole time. I very nearly cried. Felt like the scene from Ratatouille where Remy experiences real flavour for the first time. Even if I was to die tomorrow, I’m grateful this was the most recent restaurant I’ve been to.
Diego, my server- super friendly, knowledgeable, he answered every question, accommodated every annoying thing we asked without skipping a beat. The kitchen staff were laughing and joking with each other here and there, never being distracted once. Every single thing tasted amazing. The place was packed, but it didn’t bother me. It made me sincerely happy to see people around me having the same experience as me.
Go here as soon as they open. Get the chilaquiles (green sauce), get the menudo, get some fish tacos, work your way up to the hottest sauce you can. We really only have one chance at life- I feel genuine pity for anyone that doesn’t experience this place before their time on earth is up.
I’d give 6 stars if I could. I’m convinced this is the best Mexican...
Read moreFood was fine. It's nothing special. The quality and presentation is the same as throwing it together yourself at home. It's literally exactly how you'd make it at home with nothing extra.
Price was reasonable. Still pricey since it's a restaurant, but not insultingly high. 25 dollars per person for an entree and drink essentially.
The restaurant is small and extremely claustrophobic. You'll probably be almost touching complete strangers at the tables on either side of you if you eat here when it's busy.
We went at like 3pm-ish
Didn't like how absurdly many tables and chairs are crammed into the place. I guess enough customers are fine with it that it hasn't negatively affected their business to cater to those who value personal space while they eat. I'd prefer at least half an arms length, but you won't get that here.
The waitress seemed upset at us the whole time. I assume she was having a bad day or she just really doesn't want to work there. Had to physically get up out of my seat to go and fetch her for the bill once I realized she was purposely ignoring us, or simply has extremely poor instincts when it comes to service. We made obvious deliberate communication-oriented eye contact several times while she chatted with another coworker and stared at us trying to get her attention for a while before I got up. The restaurant was not busy at the time. She wasn't busy doing literally anything besides staring at us and chatting, so it really seemed deliberate. She was short/brief with us, and I'd even say rude, given we're just trying to order food, eat, and leave, and were polite and didn't have any special requests. It literally just felt like she hated us for some reason which is super weird for a server in a restaurant when you are hardly even talking beyond giving her the basic information she needs in order to serve you, with no altercation occuring during the process.
It's a good place for simple food, but it really sucked to eat there. I might do takeout some other time if I don't feel like making those types of good...
