Edit: We visited again in June 2025, I wasn’t able to write a review in the same day. But the experience has been unforgettable - in a negative way!
So, it was our must visit place for Vada-Pav. We went there and ordered the same. The vada-pav had sweet chutney in it. I loved their vadapav so much that I can never forget its taste, because its authentic Mumbai style only with red Ladin maharashtrian chutney and a fried mirchi. We told the server the same, she said that’s how it’s been prepared. I still said that’s not true and I had to prove myself that I’m frequent customer just for their vadapav by saying that’s there’s always another lady that greets us since the time it opened and she is gujarati lady who was pregnant. The waiter said yes that’s right. The waiter said “ok, we will change it for you”. Then, the chef comes and asks what the problem was and I repeat myself, he urges it come with sweet chutney. And adds that if we didn’t want it we had to tell them at the time of placing order.
I told him no one asked if we wanted the sweet chutney or not so how do we know that we had to say that? Also, as a frequent customer we never did that in past.
Anyway, we waited. And the waiter came again and asked if we wanted to order anything else, after a while. So, I said no. But I asked her that you said you would change the vadapav. Now, she denied that she was going to change. So we got up and left. However, seeing how after a business makes profits and adds new staff it changes the heart and soul of it. We loved Vivaan’s for its warmth and homelyness. It has lost it. The love that other lady served with can’t be matched by this new staff. And, I loved how the old staff the two ladies that were there before knew about maharashtrian and Mumbai dishes and flavours. The new staff have no idea. And I doubt the chef has changed too!
Food - very good and almost authentic. We ordered vada pav (the best in the city), dahi puri ( really good ), paneer kaathi roll (must try), cutting chai (perfect kettlie chai), sabudana vada (good; one time try). All food was fresh and hot. You could smell the aroma.
Service - quick, warm and pleasant.
Ambience - nice quirky Indian street style.
Enjoyed my visit. And recommend it. Saw clean high chairs for babies and neat washrooms.
Suggestion - please stop using paper cups for water. Use glass cups instead to protect environment. This place was busy on a weekday so I imagine the amount of paper used in use...
Read moreWe finally made it to Vivaan's Yummies, which has been on our list for awhile. But we're YYC southies, and don't make it north too often for a meal...however, it was Father's Day so we made a special effort to try Mumbai street eats - and we were so glad we did!
I've been following Vivaan for awhile on Insta so I knew the interior would be special - but I have to admit the large yellow mural adorning the main wall is awesome, and something I could look at for awhile trying to absorb the street scene it depicts (so I took a photo of it!). Really wonderful, but even more surprisingly awesome was the peacock wallpaper adorning the gender-neutral bathrooms. So so cool. And the food, well the food was spectacular too!
It being our first time there we took awhile to peruse the menu = so many exciting choices. We luv East Indian food, and have our own go-to establishments near where we live that we take-out from for our weekly fix, but Vivaan's offers a lot of different items we had never heard of?
Now my Viking has an explosive tolerance for heat, so even though our lovely server warned him about the heat level of the Paneer The Cha Pav - he went for it and thoroughly enjoyed it, telling our server he could've taken even more heat - ha! I ordered the Pan Bhaji for a more mild starter while we waited for our sizzling Chicken Schezwan Momos (so so good OMG!). We finished off with superb Cutting Chai.
Because we knew we wouldn't be able to make it back for awhile we also took 2 curries and some Na'an to go. Warning here that even though we ordered everything medium-spice, their offering were just on the edge of too spicy, for me. However, when we finally sat down to enjoy the Goan Fish Curry and Mutton Pav the next day, everything still tasted so so so good!!
Cannot highly recommend Vivaan Yummies enough!! If you are in their 'hood, you must make them your go-to. If you're on the other edge of the city, as we are, please make an extra special effort to go and visit and get your fill of their super-yummy Mumbai-inspired street food! And I'd still like to know where did they get...
Read moreI’ve had the worst experience today at this restaurant. I drove all the way to try this place for Indian food just to see that they have so many limitations to their menu. The server told me they are serving chole bhature so, I ordered 3 of those along with 1 samosa chat and few drinks. When i got my order, the chole tasted weirdly off as if there’s no taste and they smelled like as if they’re burnt. I told the server how i felt about the food just after I took my first bite and she went back in the kitchen. Soon after, another server came and said there is nothing wrong with the food and the table behind us ordered the same thing so, there’s nothing to complain about. Little did he know, I heard the customers behind our table complaining to each other about how terrible their service was and they left after eating. Anyway, I asked him if i could get the bill because I wasn’t going to eat that awful tasting food. He went and brought me the bill for $50. He said I have to pay for everything even when i just took 1 bite and didn’t touch the food after that. I paid the whole amount and told him that it’s upsetting to pay for something I didn’t even eat. I also told him that I don’t mind paying for the samosa chat that i liked and the drinks but paying for Chole bhature was just not justified. He didn’t even offer any discount and said I will still need to charge you for whatever you ordered. Worst service ever! Even the fast food knows how to serve guests better than this. I’m a food industry manager by profession and i know how hard it is working in food industry but this is no way of serving guests. Ridiculous!
I don’t understand how people are writing great things about...
