We have recently moved to the area and have been trying out the local establishments. We passed this place a few times and decided to give it a try.
The dining area is clean and has a nice pub-like setting. The menu is not too big and not too small, a good enough variety, and the prices are affordable. Unfortunately that’s where the good news ends.
It was karaoke night, and for some reason, after setting up for karaoke, they started blasting Latino dance music. Really loud. We had to yell over the music.
I ordered a burger, which came on a wet soggy bun. Both top and bottom. After trying to get some attention, I took my plate to the bar, and asked for a dry bun. I ended up with a burger on a cold bun, but it was dry. The fries are not home made, and they had a weird coating on them. Not what you expect from a pub. Service was ok. I felt bad for the 1 woman who was both bartender and server, so I am hesitant to complain. But it’s not a good sign when you have to return the hand-held payment machine to the bar yourself, because it was dropped off and not retrieved.
I was really surprised to find out this place is only a year old. It felt more like a place that has seen better days. I think it’s ok if you are just stopping by for a drink. But if you want to appeal to those who want dinner in a pub, I would advise the owner to create an atmosphere reflective of an English pub, be fair to your servers and staff appropriately, and create a kitchen that serves fresh...
Read moreWe love local and are always up to try new places. The staff was the highlight... as even though our server was clearly newer to serving, they were friendly and attentive. The owner or manager came by to say hi as well. So the feel is correct. The pricing is on the lower end and unfortunately the food reflects this. Over the years, we've become a couple of food snobs...and to be clear, the food is not bad and the portions are good. It's just not craveable food. I am also stingy with my stars, especially on my first visit.
So if you are looking for a reasonably priced meal in the downtown Cobourg area and value good service, give the Claymore a swing...you may not be knocked of your feet but more importantly, you will not be disappointed either. My Scottish father would absolutely love this place... good food, good price, friendly and...
Read moreI was really hoping to like this new(ish) pub in our little downtown, and had heard good things, but my friend and I were pretty disappointed when we went last night. There was only one server on shift and she was not very efficient. We waited quite a while before she came back with our drinks, and she spilled water as she put glasses down on the table. She seemed in a hurry to get us out, grabbing my plate and pulling it away before asking if I was done (I kind of was, but I could've kept nibbling), and didn't even ask if it was one bill or two (we would've preferred to split it) - she just brought the bill and the payment machine already loaded up and ready to go, and left. Food was ok, standard pub fare. Fish and chips was greasy. Sadly, I won't...
