I would like to review Hwawon Korean-Chinese restaurant in Coquitlam.
Food: we ordered the usual combo A, which is jjajangmyun, jjampong and tansuyuk (sweet and sour pork) Jjampong: seafood was cooked well with the perfect texture. Broth had a nice smoky flavour as well. However, it seemed a bit too spicy and too heavy on the chilli powder. 6/10 Jjajangmyun: it seemed like the chef has his own taste/style (different from standard recipe) but it was not to our liking. Tasted like 3-minute instant sauce, too thick, too sweet and too salty all at the same. Very disappointing. 5/10 Tansuyuk: meat was tender and flavourful, batter was chewy and overall very enjoyable. We were almost full by just having the tansuyuk. The best in Vancouver.. a must try. 10/10
Service: we were greeted and seated promptly. After the dishes were brought out, she did not check in on us at all. The store is small with just a few tables. It would not have taken much effort to do a round and check in on the guests but the server only seemed to move when guests requested something.
Overall: it was evident that the chef is very talented and skillful, however the flavours of the dishes were not to our liking. If you want to try a unique twist on the standard Korean-Chinese menus, it may be...
Read moreOne of the best spots in metro Vancouver for very delicious Korean food. Located in Coquitlam, the restaurant is tucked away in a small strip mall and is a real hidden gem.
We ordered a variety of different dishes for dinner.
The Pan fried black bean noodle was really nice. Quantity wise it was great the portion was massive. The different kinds of seafood, octopus, squid and shrimp really complimented the noodles.
The sweet and sour deep fried pork was also really good. It wasn’t overly greasy or soft, had a nice crunch on the outside and went well with a tangy sauce.
The fried chicken was good. A bit spicy but really solid. Crispy on the outside, soft in the middle and a nice mildly spicy tangy sauce to it with plenty of vegetables and onions. It was delightful.
The real star was the cream saewoo shrimp. They were giant, and the sweet mayonnaise drizzle to it was pleasant.
Overall, I would say that this place has better eats than most of the Korean spots around North road. Nice small location, cozy feeling to the place and the excellent portion sizes really make this a place I would return to and try other dishes at! Pleasantly happy, will come back...
