Today the owner of the Portland Street Second Cup tried to kick me out due to my disability
Today I went on a coffee date with my girlfriend at the Second Cup on Portland Street in Dartmouth. When I bought my coffee I was asked to show proof of vaccination. For those of you who dont know me I have a brain tumor and autoimmune condition. I lived in hospital for two years and have been in and out for the last 8 years. Due to my autoimmune condition, Mast Cell Activation Syndrome, I am unable to get vaccinations. If I were to get a vaccination I would more than likely die. Because of this I have a vaccine exemption form from my doctor. I was the only person my doctor gave a vaccine exemption form to. I gave the barista my vaccine exemption form and she accepted it and started making my coffee. Then the owner came out and told me that I had to leave and she didn't care if I have an autoimmune condition that she didn't want "people like me" in her business. I called the non emergency police and was told that my vaccine exception is the same thing as a vaccine passport and should be accepted as such. I was instructed to call corporate and report her. I am honestly shocked and disgusted that people with a disability are being discriminated against in our beautiful community. This is the only business that has treated me this way especially after spending over $30 on coffee and cakes. I am a huge advocate for those with disabilities. I was recently a panelist at The Disability and Work Canada convention and have fought for disability rights in Canada for years. This should not be tolerated in a place as welcoming and supportive as Nova Scotia. We need to educate the public and insure that this doesn't happen to other disabled people. It's heartbreaking and embarrassing to be kicked out of a business due to a disability that is not my fault. No one wants to be sick and no one should be discriminated against because of...
Read moreVery friendly staff, Canadian owned and operated, the manager cares about their store and is very friendly. Food is fresh and consistently tasty. Coffees and mixed drinks are also consistent in temperature -hot/cold (respectively), flavour and quality. Service is always accurate, knowledgeable and friendly. Drive thru service is the same speed as inside which is relatively quick compared to other similar establishments. Lots of seating indoors and outside patio seating. The kitchen and seating area is always clean. My one and only complaint is the attention to detail with regard to the cleanliness of the non-food related areas. I have not entered the washrooms so I can't comment on that, but the hall to the washrooms and the doors of the washrooms are quite dirty. The walls and ceiling need a deep clean. Everything else is regularly...
Read moreClean store, cozy environment, clean but crowded washroom and plenty of seating. The staff seemed a little uninterested, but I won’t judge them for that. The blonde girl working there was friendly, though. I said a small iced vanilla bean latte but was rung in for a medium, but I didn’t say anything so that was fine. My friend ordered a chocolate oatcake but received a carrot cake. She also didn’t speak up because she was fine with the carrot cake and didn’t want to bother the employees. The sweets all looked so good it was hard to choose. I didn’t care for my drink, but I’m not much of a coffee girl either so no big deal. The muffins are definitely not as good as they look. It was hard, stale, and had a strange texture and bitter flavor.
Overall the experience was fine. Definitely recommend sitting inside for a drink and...
