Good food all around, with impressive stand out items; the menu has expanded and the service and atmosphere is super.
We finally made it to Queen's Cross after the COVID halt and we were very happy with it. We tasted a couple of the great items from their kitchen and got to see some of the returning menu.
We arrived on a Sunday evening, a bit late for dinner for some people but not for me. The place was kind of busy for that time but not too bad. We didn't have to wait and had a slight choice of tables. The service was prompt and friendly, and or server did a good job of helping different tables through different parts of their visit all at the same time.
It was a simple meal for us: an appie and a burger & fries to share. Looking at the menu to begin with, the prices seemed in line with other places so we were not driven away from any part of it because of the numbers.
It took us a while to order because of our decision to share - we had both found a few interesting items we wanted to try and had to narrow it down. We ended up with mozza sticks and a chicken burger with fries. Here was the one bad part of the place - the burgers didn't come with the sides, you had to pay more for them.
Now, maybe that will be different on the expanded menu (which you will probably be experiencing - it is just a few days off from our visit). And maybe you don't want fries with your burger, so you're happy to see that.
But let me tell you that the beer battered fries were amazing and I think you will want them. I'm not a big French fry fan (other people's are better than the ones on my plate) but these made me want more and more.
I'd also like to say that I really loved the beading and battering on the chicken. It has a nice peppery taste that stood out and an amazing crispyness that was not lost at all through the meal.
A quick note about the beer selection - first of all, the tap selection was pretty good; mostly local artisan ones or popular European beers. That list was good and the glass poured for my partner was huge and filled to the rim. Unfortunately, tap beer hurts me now, so I was looking at bottles. As is common in places around here, it's mostly big name lagers (and ales), so I do wish there was at least one local artisan pale ale or IPA bottle or can on the list. Not something everyone cares about, just my humble opinion.
So, all around, we are very happy with the night out and glad to wander back in the near future. This is still our favourite pub...
Read moreTwo stars for the lovely band and the food which was on point. However, it saddens me to take away the three because our server was horrible (understatement), idk if it was racism or just plain attitude, I understand you’re not having the best of the night but that is absolutely no excuse to take it out on your patrons. I asked for a straw, she literally yelled at me saying no we don’t have those, chill woman! The entire group felt the hostility, and it was conscious decision to not tip our best because it wasn’t worth it. Mind you two of us on the table work in Earls, so when the check came, we were overcharged because of one item being double billed which again she refused to accept because so busy babbling about how she is going to end up paying from her pocket because some of us tipped less, it came to a point where I had to literally tell her you could’ve been nicer!! Two of us were celebrating our birthday weekend and the number of shots should’ve made it obvious but this woman was plain daft. Animal print top serving upstairs tonight I hope you learn basic courtesy to be nicer specially if your job depends on it and not blame others. Self reflection would...
Read moreWe routinely come in for a couple of pints and some food after a regular monthly meeting. (10 out of 12 months) Last evening we repeated only this time ( and after we were served the first round,) we were informed rather brusquely that because we were a group of eight, an 18% gratuity would be added to our bill. Yep - 18%.
To put this in perspective, we also frequent another pub that's located a little ways away - same group. Only this other establishment not only does not charge us a forced 18% gratuity, every now and again a plate of nachos or a bowl of wings shows up - on the house.
So Queens Cross, - For the record, we generally tip between 12% and 15% on a monthly invoice that usually tops $200.. We've been known to go as high as 20% if the server pays attention to us. .Spread over 10 visits annually this works to $2000 in annual revenue and a lot of $ in tips left behind. But you made it pretty apparent that as a group of eight on an otherwise slow Monday night we're now a problem for you - your punitive pricing for our patronage was swift and decisive. But no worries - we're sorry to be a bother and it won't happen...
