Unexpectedly walked in during their grand opening early evening. I was greeted and shown to my table promptly. Interior is well decorated with comfortable tables and chairs I enjoyed the open kitchen concept. The menu contains many pictures for those who eat with their eyes. Different styles of broth separated in the menu, and a variety of toppings are available. I asked if the noodles are made in house. Apparently they are sent to Edmonton, but our server didn't know where they came from. Their original locations are in Montreal and Toronto, so I assume the noodles are from out east. I ordered the Gold Kome Spicy Miso.
Food arrived very very fast. I think it was just under 5 minutes since ordering. The server offered free Clear Broth if I found their soup too thick. I declined the broth. First sip of the soup, I definitely tasted the Miso base but it wasn't very hot. It was warm but not steaming. I couldn't taste any spiciness but found the soup very salty. Difficult for me to taste any other flavors since it was too salty.
The noodles were interesting. I've never seen ramen noodles like that before. They were pretty yellow and short. Visually they were kind of curly, and reminded me of instant noodles. I didn't find anything special about the quality of the noodles, just didn't seem that fresh.
An interesting topping were the potato wedges. They tasted good as potato wedges but didn't add value to my ramen.
Finished about half my noodles since it was too salty for my liking. Servers asked for feedback due to my unfinished bowl. I provided some feedback regarding the saltiness of the soup and the quality of the noodles. The server tried to explain the saltiness is from the vinegar, and I could have added clear broth.
Tried to pay the bill via Visa but their interac machines had no connection.
Overall attentive service and nice interior. I was disappointed that the quality of ramen was below par. Given their prime location and experience from the east, I was hoping they could be a strong addition to our lacking Ramen scene. I feel there are still some kinks to work out before I try my...
Read moreI had been a regular customer at this place so I had a stamp card. The service is usually pretty good, but this time I was not satisfied. The server was new, but the manager was not accommodating at all. I had gone in to get a free ramen because the stamp card indicated that a ramen was going to be free on my 10th visit. However the manager kept insisting that the free ramen was on my 11th visit. I had confirmed that my ramen was going to be free before I sat down. I ordered the basic vegetarian as it was supposed to be the free one. After I started eating it half way the server is forced to come and tell me that the ramen will be charged for and the free ramen will be given on my next visit. Honestly, I just ordered the basic one because it was free. I usually order a Tan Tan, and had I known I was paying I would have just ordered that. After this they go on to tell me that the vegetarian ramen is 2-3 dollars extra on my 11th visit. They claim that the free ramen is limited to pork/beef broth and vegetarian one will be an extra charge. The poor server was new, and she had to carry out instructions that her manager kept giving her. She noticed that I was not pleased so she tried to be extra friendly. If the owner/manager gets a chance to read this please be known that you have possibly turned away a regular customer. I almost didn't bring my card today because your card is misleading, so you almost had a dasher today. Please work on clarifying your card so others are NOT misled. The two star is only for the server, felt bad for her as she had to be the bearer of bad news on behalf of...
Read more"Michellin Recommended" it says on the door. But of course when I tried to look into it, I honestly can't find any information on it's supposed michellin recommendation. But apparently it was from one of it's new york branches? Well, either way, I can tell you that it doesn't carry over to Edmonton.
I was actually very excited for Downtown's first ramen shop, since it's something that Downtown had lacked for a very long time. But the ramen here is unfortunately somewhat disappointing.
Their main focus is on miso-based ramen, hence the name Misoya, but the way that their menu is laid out, it's not that apparently and for first-time goers, it's actually somewhat confusing to look at and understand. Gold means a richer miso, silver means lighter ramen, and then at the very back they contain other ramen types such as TanTan and Curry.
But then under each gold and silver section comes a sort of... level? Of how...fancy? your ramen is. This is a dumb way of doing things, just sayin'. Anyway, if you go for the top, which you would, because if you don't it doesn't come with much, it's actually pretty expensive. Ramen is supposed to be cheap comfort food, and this is not it.
Then there's the happy hour! $10 ramen! Saving grace!! Nope. That $10 ramen only applies to literally the most barebones ramen on the menu... So... thanks... for nothing? Or for... baiting me? I may as well go to T&T and buy some high end instant ramen for $5.
Long story short, only come here if you're downtown and want a ramen place within walking distance. But it's probably...
