We've gone here a few times and generally very high quality food that justifies the cost.
Appetizers, as per usual, were very good. I had requested short ribs as a main course as their meat is usually very well done. In short (no pun intended), the short rib fell terribly short. The rib had so much globular fat that I had to tease out fascicles of meat to eat. Ended up eating about 1/3 of the meat before calling it quits. The side potatoes were smothered with yogurt/sour cream despite making no mention of that on the menu -- something we both try to avoid. The asparagus was served at a cool temperature and undercooked. We still paid full price for the entire thing. They did an uncharacteristically terrible job with this dish.
We really usually enjoy this restaurant.
Update from this review 8 months prior.
We tried the restaurant again this week as we were told that they've improved on some of the earlier issues we'd experienced 8 months prior in regard to food quality and portion sizes. Indeed, we had a much better experience, and felt that this restaurant had likely gotten over the earlier issues. We decided to give it another try on a slightly busier weekend evening as it was one of the only restaurants we looked at that still had openings.
We requested a seat away from the back window d/t cold weather, and stated we were happy to wait and thanked the server for doing so. We were accomodated at a table with a dirty seat (an oily substance on the seat), asked for the seat to be cleaned. It felt like this was a big inconvenience for them, as they were busy. Once we sat, we ordered drinks and waited for 15 - 20 minutes for our drink. When we inquired, the wait was due to the fact that they had run out of clean glassware. The drinks came and we ordered appetizers to expedite things.
We requested an item that we had earlier in the week from them, where they had followed a request to omit a part of the dish. Our waiter for this meal us that they "dont do that". We were surprised at that, and when we mentioned that it was done earlier in the week, he asked us which day? We told him the day, and he replied that he had worked earlier in the week and wasn't aware of this, much as if he simply thought we were lying about it. The server was confrontational about it. I guess the customer isnt always right, even when the customer is exactly right.
We said very little else, paid our bill, and left the restaurant.
Very disappointing at the confrontational table service; we won't be back. There are many other restaurants in this city, with friendly service and good food. We've never had such a...
Read moreI made reservations at this restaurant, thinking that it had great reviews. Upon looking at the reviews on google the day of, I saw that it went down 0.3 points but no mind!
Upon arriving for our reservation, we were seated right away; however, it took about 15 minutes for a server to come greet us. The hostess was nice enough to bring us lukewarm water. I will say that our server was good, but she was buzzing around doing 3 other jobs at the same time - so not really her fault.
My party of four order our drinks and meals. I honestly could not recommend a single thing we ordered. The $16 halloumi cheese salad was maybe worth $8 (at most). It was just some spring salad with an easy to do mustard like vinegrette with 6 small cold and rubbery halloumi cubes. The veal chop was over done (asked for rare, came out well done and then some. Smothered in a overly salted gravy that was almost inedible to my pallet. The short rib was flavourless and just tasted like salt.
I ordered the lamb chop and they completely forgot to make it. I eventually asked for them to cancel the order because the rest of my party was basically done eating by that point. They packed it up for me anyways and comped it.
I told our server that we were really disappointed with the whole dinner and that the salad tasted like they had made it yesterday (keep in mind, I did stress that it was not her fault and that things happen), but she told me that, "It must be an off day." At $40 a plate, it better be a decent day everyday...Did not take the salads off the order or offer anything to compensate that one person in our party could not even stomach to eat it...that along with the fact that forgot my meal and instead said it was coming right out - after 15 minutes - I would have expected some other compensation - our bill was still $164 after comping my meal that I did not want anymore.
Save your money and go somewhere else. Not worth risking "an off day" and a credit card charge for a meal you could easily and most likely better prepare at home. Nice looking place on the...
Read more"for special occasions, like birthdays or anniversaries, I would go someplace else" Update : why don't the owners respond to any of the reviews? It's as if they don't care at all about what their customers think, good or bad.
Zula Kitchen and Wine Bar- 14055 West Block Dr NW suite 120, Edmonton Space 5/5 Service 3/5 (see last comment below) Food 5/5 Value 5/5 happy hour appetizers Value 3.5/5 for the meals
I took my family and my in-laws there tonight for our 25th anniversary and the place checked off a lot of our requirements Easy access for elderly Parents Vegetarian options for my daughter, Meat options for myself and a variety of options for the rest of us. The atmosphere is nice, relaxed, cozy but not cramped. Easy to have conversations and to hear each other which is rare to find these days. Our food was delicious, and we ate a lot - I only took pictures of a few of the items we ordered. Service was good but I was disappointed that they didn't do anything special for my wife and me as it was our 25th anniversary and I mentioned it a few times, including when I made the reservations. We spent, with the imposed 18% tip, over $550 and it would have been a nice gesture to have at least brought out a slice of cheesecake for my wife and I to share. Sparklers don't cost much either and it would have made for a nice ending to our special night.
I suggest going mon-Thursday for their happy hour specials on wine and appetizers and for special occasions, like birthdays or anniversaries, I would go...
