Portage Orchard — Restaurant in Gatineau

Restaurant was almost empty but it was Good Friday and it is a new place so to be expected. Our table was a group of 7 family members celebrating a birthday. Food was good (quality and portion size). However, it went downhill from there. We were the only table in our whole section and were celebrating my son's 18th birthday. No acknowledgement of the birthday even though it was mentioned in the reservation and again when we arrived. Server was not welcoming and did not attempt to be friendly or engaging. We asked to change the station to the NBA playoffs on one of the 2 TVs (a junior hockey game was on one TV and a fishing show on the other). As no one else was in the section, we were the only table who could even see these TVs. Waitress at first dismissed us saying they could only show hockey (but as referenced, one TV was showing a fishing show). After some back and forth, she reluctantly said she would check with the manager. Came back 15 minutes later and just said the 'manager said no'. No reason, just no. My question to the management is: as a manager in a new restaurant that is empty why not come by and say hi to your guests who just made a simple request, especially when one of the members is celebrating a birthday with their family? It was a small request that would have meant a lot to my son and you chose to say no and not provide a sound reason. My son is a huge basketball fan and it was the playoffs. I’m going to assume this was just a bad night for Portage Orchard, based on such a high review score overall… however our experience was disappointing.

Our waiter was friendly and courteous - however he was the only waiter on a Saturday night at 6pm. Was not greeted at table for over 5 minutes - clearly they were understaffed this evening and this is managements fault, not the wait or cooking staff.

Atmosphere: good, nice location. Beer selection good - a few local craft brews on tap.

After ordering, we waited almost 45 minutes before seeing the first plate (after asking and flagging down wait staff).

Food: The kids fish and chips was a very large portion and tasted good.

Portage Burger was good but slightly overcooked/dry.

Chicken curry - lacking flavor, good overall.

Beef Braised Stout: unfortunately we can’t give this an honest review since a mistake was made in kitchen and it was served with curry sauce.

On a side note the the staff and the servers were all lovely and excellent however TERRIBLE TREATMENT BY THE MANAGER!!! DO NOT COME HERE IF YOU WANT TO BE TREATED HUMANELY WITH RESPECT. The Worst. treatment. ever. possible. The manager’s completely disregarded me and called me inhumane things simply because I had a dietary restrictions and couldn’t eat at this place even though I had ordered another item simply for out of respect, and even that didn’t hold them back from their terrible behaviour and yelling at me publicly. And all things aside even that food and drink was didgustingly bad and was made with no effort possible. The manager was simply super inhumanely rude. Embarrassing behaviour. They let every other customer around me see their true inhumane behavior and everyone despised them. No words.. SO...
