We waited a long time to go to The British, it had a fairly poor reputation before it was recently renovated and while it looked nice from the outside I wasn't excited about checking it out.
Boy was I wrong to hold off.
My wife and I finally decided to go on a Wednesday evening for dinner around 6:30 and have gone back regularly since.
First, the restaurant is gorgeous, the dinning room is large, if not a little bland, but the bar area is where you want to be. It has a rustic wood and stone feel that is really modern but cozy. Lots of TVs to go around so no worries there.
It was certainly very busy but we were looked after right away. I really didn't see a bad table in the place and we got a great one. Service was fast and polite, our server was attentive and knowledgeable.
Menu is nothing new; sort of your usual pub affair. Everything we had however was excellent and tasty. In particular I've had the fish and chips a few times and it's quite good. My wife has particularly enjoyed the poutine and nachos. Everything has always arrived in a good amount of time, properly cooked and at the proper temperature.
Prices are where they fall a little short, they're not out of this world expensive but you can expect to pay between $60 to $80 for a small app, two good plates and two glasses of wine. Probably a little much for the quality of pub food you get. That said, I get the feeling you pay for the location and ambience quite a bit here.
A few minor annoyances. Parking is convoluted at best. There is parking on the street which is usually taken and a parking lot in the back, which is off a side street, but it's unclear whether this is part of the hotel or restaurant.
Also, of the three times we've gone, every single time we've had to walk through a gaggle of smokers at the entrance when entering and when leaving. We're not smokers and while I have no issue with people who do smoke I don't like getting a lung full of second hand blue smoke before and after I eat. The restaurant needs to address this at some point or we'll simply stop going, it's that gross.
In the end this is a great place to go for a variety of occasions. Great for a light hearted date night, for a group of guys and girls to hang out or if you want a good solo meal sitting at a bar. The environment is great, the crowd is relaxed and welcoming, food is good and it's a great location.

Read moreI have many times book a room for work and my previous experience was good until the scary and nightmare I had yesterday.
I book at first a junior suite for 3 days and I extended my stay for another day. This hotel doesn't have like others hotel a front desk open 24 hours anyway I had a gathering party with friends and arrived at the hotel at 3h30 am. I wasn't able to open the main door because the girl did not update the entrance card.
I am a WOMEN and was terrify and did know where to go. The taxi service wasn't available and I wasn't able to drive my car because I had few drinks and was over limit.
My only option was to sleep in my car. It was cold and I was afraid and more terrify when I had to go outside to urinate.
I call 8 times the office for help and let many messages for help and never had a return call. This morning when they opened the door after 9 am I went to see them and I wasn't happy about terrify night. OMG, instead to have empathie and recognize that they had security problems. They blame me to not keep the emergency number that they provide in the room. They had no empathie and did not care about my security. They knew that they had a big security problems but they prefer to blame me. to recognize that they have a big security problems. I said that I wasn't able to open the main entrance and for sure wasn't able to go in my room. I was so disappointed the way they treated me without empathie and no respect. They even threatened me to call the cops if I wasn't leaving. I Told them that I did nothing wrong and wasn't afraid and I even encouraged them to do it. I told them that I had a top secret security clearance and nothing to hide and I was a good person.
An employee nicely talk to me and she yeld at her to avoid talking to me. This discussing and so much power abuse.
I am sure the owner is not aware of their behavior. I told them that I will find the owner to ensure he is aware of the behavior of the 2 girls which is the manager and the girl that is at the front desk. I have they name and hopefully I will be able to advise the owner.
This place exists for long time and my mother had his wedding party over there in 1964. I hope that they will keep their good reputation but it not the owner that manage it anymore.
I may have written mistake in my story because I am French. I explained my nightmare in English to ensure that...
Read moreGo elsewhere. Especially at the cost they charge. We stayed here in early Oct for two nights (Prince of Wales suite). The building is beautiful and the room seemed nice on first glance, but once you peel back the spider webs (literally) you can see it is not well maintained.
No glassware in the rooms - when I asked at the front desk for water glasses and wine glasses, I was ushered to the bar to pick some up myself. Explanation for the no glassware from the front desk was "we don't include it as people tend to steal our glassware".
Parking - parking is advertised as being free - but only for those who are parking on the street. So that was a bit of a bait and switch. If you want the on-premises parking - open your wallet. I should start charging guests at my home to park in my driveway. Ugh.
Not easy to get luggage to your rooms - no suggestions from front desk at check in on how best to bring your luggage in. No ramps to wheel luggage up the many steps to the elevator lobby area. Not a big deal, but if you are staying multiple nights and you have a cooler with you - not easy.
Robes - my partner specifically left her robe at home as the suite was advertised to include robes. When we arrived there were none. My partner called down and inquired about the missing robes. She was informed that robes are not included with the rooms and we don't have any. When she kindly informed them that this was advertised with the suite package - they magically appeared in 15 minutes.
Food/Restaurant - Stay away. All I can say. Go dine elsewhere if you are choosing to stay here. There is a nice authentic Mexican restaurant just up the road...
