Hidden Gem on Surrey Street: Sugo's Affordable Elegance Sugo on Surrey, nestled discreetly on Surrey Street, has effortlessly secured its place as one of Guelph's finest hidden gems, delivering an exceptional yet affordable fine dining experience. My recent visit left me in awe, marking it as one of the best culinary adventures in the Guelph area. One of the standout features of Sugo is its ever-changing menu, ensuring that repeat visits bring forth new and exciting flavors. This dynamic approach to dining is a refreshing departure from the mundane, promising an experience that stays engaging and enjoyable. The service at Sugo is nothing short of impeccable, earning a solid 10/10. Our server demonstrated genuine care and attention to detail, elevating our dining experience to new heights. Every aspect, from recommendations to ensuring our comfort, was handled with a level of professionalism and warmth that left a lasting impression. Our culinary journey began with the highly recommended calamari fritti, and it did not disappoint. The calamari was fried to perfection, boasting a delightful crispiness, and was complemented by a sauce that tantalized our taste buds. Its unique flavor left us intrigued, adding an extra layer of enjoyment to the dish. Moving on to the salads, often considered a basic offering, Sugo's attention to detail shone through. The salads were a testament to the restaurant's commitment to quality, proving that even the simplest dishes can be elevated to a level of excellence. The star of the show, however, was the lobster linguine. Undoubtedly the best dish on the menu, the lobster was impeccably fresh, with no hint of unpleasant odor. The creamy sauce struck a perfect balance, enhancing the overall dining experience without overwhelming the palate. Our family also indulged in other main dishes, each proving to be an incredible delight. Discovering Sugo on Surrey was a serendipitous moment during a casual night out, and I can confidently assert that it stands as one of, if not the best fine dining experience in Guelph. Its unassuming location near downtown adds to its charm, making it a true hidden gem that deserves recognition. In the realm of Guelph's culinary scene, Sugo on Surrey reigns supreme, offering a dining experience that is simply unparalleled. Period.

This was our 5th anniversary, and while the meal was overall satisfactory, it wasn't what we had hoped it would be based on viewing the menu and reading reviews. My wife enjoyed her pasta, we both enjoyed the calamari, however my steak was undercooked to my preference for Ribeye - Medium - and took 30 minutes to come out. I couldn't say anything because it was sliced, and would have to be recooked completely - after which my wife would already be done with her meal... the vegetables also tasted like the water they were boiled in - thankfully it was all served with a ton of butter on top of the steak so they were mostly edible aside from some mushy broccolini that had just absorbed so much of the cooking water they were reheated in. The worst part of the whole meal sadly, was the fact that the whole restaurant smelt like the bathroom cleaner from the second we walked in. We were seated and the smell only got stronger. Once I walked into the bathroom, I almost choked because of how strong the product was. Something that is incredibly difficult to enjoy regardless of my scent sensitivities when trying to enjoy a celebratory dinner. I commented on the smell when we first arrived to which I was told that's how it always smells... I suppose this should have been my sign to leave. The meal overall was average and I would try the restaurant again as my wife did enjoy her seafood linguine, however the environment of the meal was absolutely terrible and I would certainly ask to sit outside next time if I was to return.

Overall really great apps, but mains fell short of the mark. We went with crab dip and calamari for apps - both blew us out of the water! Perfect balance of flavours for both, crab dip was such a generous portion and the breadsticks were crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, just the right amount of parm dusting - it’s everything I ever wanted and more. We were told calamari was a staple and we understood why - not your typical calamari, this had a lovely tomato based sauce and still retained a decent crunch, we could eat this all day. Now for the mains, the smoked salmon pizza was quite good, however it was a tad dry (needed more sauce), and more capers for the acidic bite would have been nice. The butternut squash ravioli…you should steer clear of that… it made me question the whole pasta menu. The ravioli pasta shell was sooo thick, and the cook was quite far under al dente 😬 There was also a lack of salt in every component - the pasta was clearly not cooked in water that was salted enough, the filling was lacking flavour, the cream topping with the pesto mixed into a very unappetizing colour and just weighed the dish down to eternity. The ravioli was in desperate need of an acid!! Such a sore disappointment, I really wanted to love it after seeing all the reviews 😔 Not sure if we will return…maybe just for a couple apps and exploring the pizza side of things

It was our first time trying this place. We went out for my friend's birthday. The food was delicious and the atmosphere was really nice. Unfortunately, there were some issues.

We had a reservation but still ended up waiting about 20 minutes for a table. There isn't really anywhere to wait inside aside from the entrance, which was really tiny and claustrophobic. It was packed with people and we literally had to hug the walls just so people could get in and out of the main doors. Literally elbow to elbow. At one point, someone with crutches came in and they had no where they could sit while they waited. Paired with how crowded it was, they had to squeeze in and stand awkwardly with their crutches. I felt really bad for them.

Once we got seated, things were going well though. The server was really nice. We asked the server in private if they did anything for birthdays so we could surprise our friend, and they said yes. They brought out a birthday dessert for my friend but imagine our surprise when they charged her for it. One of us ended up asking to put it on another one of our bills so our friend didn't have to pay nearly $12 for a slice of cheesecake on her birthday. Which she said didn't really taste all that great in the end.

So that kinda soured our opinion of the place. Charging for a birthday dessert felt kinda cheap, they should clarify it isn't free. Or at the very least, don't put the charge on the birthday guest's bill when someone else requested it. Kinda defeats the entire purpose of a "birthday dessert". Considering how expensive the place is, you'd think they wouldn't charge for it.

Either way, I suggest you avoid this place on weekends. Even with a reservation, you're going to end up waiting a while. I recommend maybe going during the week when it's a little quieter.

Just to clarify, I had no issue with the servers themselves, I know they're just doing their jobs. They were very nice. My critiques are things that are outside of their control, and are more-so aimed towards things the owners of the establishment should consider.

Edit: I forgot to mention it was snowing/raining that night. The walkway was frozen and very slippery on our way out, so they should also consider salting the entrance during the winter months. The walkway was slightly sloped, so we had to awkwardly penguin walk/slide down it to...

This is now the best Italian restaurant I've ever been to. My husband and I recently went for my birthday. It's an old century like home converted into a cozy restuarant. The service was spectacular and the food blew my mind.

My husband's tried their whiskey sour drink special. It was made with a special batch of whiskey from Grand Valley Distillery. He said it tasted just like key lime pie, he enjoyed every single drop.

Started with the asiago crab dip and this was my favorite part of the meal, and I'm not a big seafood person but I'd eat this every day if I could. It was light but rich and the little dipping bread was so nice and fluffy. Sprinkled with fresh parmesan and parsley. Amazing.

For our mains my husband had the veal and I had the truffle chicken penne. Usually I leave half to bring home but I finished it all and cleaned the plate with the piece of garlic toast. The veal came with beautiful little potatoes and perfectly cooked asparagus.

The pasta for my main was cooked perfectly, wonderful sauce and the chicken was great. I think they might have seared it possibly and that added a great flavour.

We finished off with tiramisu cheesecake made exclusively for the restaurant in the bakery next door. Tiramisu isn't my first dessert choice but this was so good. It didn't have a super strong boozy taste. Loved it.

Our server was laid back and friendly but very professional. She knew everything about the menu and offered her suggestions. Gentleman from the kitchen was bringing out food and clearing plates as he came back. Super friendly and chill staff. There seemed to be a lot of regular customers there.

The prices are a bit high but it's so worth every penny. The portions were decent and the food was so rich and tasty. We can't wait to come back and try the rest of the menu. Thank...
