Todays two piece fish and chips was not the usual good meal.. To me it was over cooked, hard and darkened. Fries which are normally dry were extra dry with extra cooking. Since new management fish has been inconsistent and this place was my #1 place for fish and chips. What I noticed was the deep fry lady was new.. she used to an employee for many years with the original owner but it's the first I have seen her back. The Newfie lady that handles the fry is on vacation and stayed with the new owner.. Fredie's fish process is two parts.. a first cook to cooling/draining racks and a second fry to finish. Of notice was two large batches of first fry which was much darker than the second batch of first fry. Perhaps this is why the fish was over done. I called over the new owner and stated my order was over cooked.. she said she would make me new fish.. she grabbed 4 pieces of the lighter first batch and fried that. Replaced one piece as I guess she only saw one full piece on the plate of fries and pieces of piece #2.. Don't know but she chose to only replace one piece and no up date warm/replacement fries.. I was at there seated counter and placed the total two plate order back on the counter saying I don't want it. Perhaps it's me.. as there was a lady leaving who gave them the thumbs up as she enjoyed here meal.. I believe there may be a language or communication issue with the new owner. I will take extra time to insure understanding is registered. I will be back!! What I did like of the return new cook was she dipped fresh fish by the short end into the batter with her hand to the first fry. This makes all the fish be coated in batter. Prior the staff used ice tongs which reduced batter coating in the tong area and thus changed the cook time in that area where the fish sometimes was dried and crisper. Ideally with changing cooks running the fryer without timers on the oil temp and cook time will effect the final out come which happened to at least my meal. What I expected was a replacement of both pieces of the over cooked fish and new fries. I did not ask for a refund, nor was one offered and the new owner was informed by staff that I didn't want any of the meal She choose not to come over...
Read moreI'd give here a 3.5 actually. Finally tried it for lunch on a sunny cold day in April 2017. A friend and I showed up about 11:35 and took two of the barstools at the counter as the two or three tables were taken. The place is quite busy. Over the next hour, there was a constant flow of take-out customers, including an older couple who had won a $150 prize in some contest which had been put on. Very friendly, chatty staff/owners. The lunch special of 2 pc fish & chips for 8.99 is a good deal, and I wasn't able to finish all of mine. The fish was fresh and cooked well, fries a bit more well done than I normally prefer, but still decent. My friend picked every last crumb off his plate. I'd go back anytime and try their clams next time I think.
2nd visit: a sunny Friday in early May 2019. Arrived about 11:45 and was greeted immediately when I walked in the door. Tried the lobster roll with fries (18.99) and it was delicious and filling with big chunks of lobster. Choice of regular or their sweet mayo (I got regular). Apparently they are voted the best lobster roll in the province, according to which survey I don't know, but I wouldn't disagree. Took the same bar stool seat as I had two years ago, which was the last seat available. 90% of the customers seemed to be regulars, and all seniors. It seems very cute in atmosphere as the staff know most by name and are very chatty with them. I overheard a conversation that the former owner sold this business last month and that the young woman who served me is the new owner. She said they will make absolutely no changes to the business, which I think is a good thing. All the best of luck to her. I'll be back! (FYI they had a sign that the clams had already sold out for the day, and not sure if that's a common occurrence or not, but I'd like to try those next).
3rd visit: a summer lunch in 2022 after covid restrictions brought back the dine-in option. Same as...

I ordered a family pack of Fish & Chips ($30) and Sweet Potato Fries ($7) this afternoon. I asked if I could pay extra to substitute the fries with sweet potato fries. The young girl over the phone informed me that the upgrade would cost an additional $3, and I agreed. However, no one notified / called me of any further price changes, even when I picked up my food.
On my way home, I received a text from my credit card company stating I had been charged $42.55. This amount doesn't make sense—if the family pack is $30 and the upgrade is $3, it should be around $38.
When I called back to inquire about a possible mistake, the girl explained that the computer system wouldn't allow the upgrade. She asked her manager, who decided to charge me the full price for the sweet potato fries without notifying me. No one called or explained this when I picked up my order.
To make matters worse, I didn't receive any regular fries. The idea behind the extra $3 was to substitute the regular fries with sweet potato fries. If the store couldn't process the upgrade, they should have either explained it to me or provided options to let me make a choice.
This store charged me extra without informing me and didn't include any regular fries.
PS: I didn't argue with the girl or the store manager because it's clear they don't care about their customers. If they did, they would have explained the situation or provided options. If you still want to order from this place, PAY ATTENTION and DON'T LET THEM CHARGE YOU...
