I’ve been to The Squire on Locke several times in the past and appreciated their gluten-free options — as someone with celiac disease, I know there are always risks when eating out and I try to be clear and cautious when ordering. Unfortunately, my most recent visit on July 18th left me very disappointed and concerned for their handling of dietary restrictions.
My boyfriend and I ordered the buffalo dip, clearly informing our server that I have celiac disease and could only have the corn chips. She confirmed she’d leave a clear note for the kitchen. Near the end of the appetizer, we found a pita chip underneath the corn chips — meaning cross-contamination had already occurred. When we pointed it out, our server acknowledged it shouldn’t have happened.
I also asked about the “gluten-friendly” chorizo gnocchi, only to be told after some hesitation that it was labeled incorrectly and couldn’t be made gluten-free at all. If I hadn’t double-checked, I could have easily eaten something unsafe.
What made this experience worse is that there was no gesture to make things right — no discount, no genuine apology beyond acknowledging the mistake. I sent a detailed email about this on July 21 and followed up on August 4 — as of today, I’ve had no response.
I understand mistakes happen, but when it comes to allergens, accuracy and communication are non-negotiable. It’s disappointing to see both a lapse in kitchen procedures and a lack of follow-up...
Read moreWe've been coming to the Squire on Locke for years since moving to Hamilton. We have always had great service, solid food, love the patio, and frequently recommend it to others visiting town.
However, we had a much different experience after we took my mother and her fiance this past Friday, and it primarily came down to our server. He had a terrible attitude from the beginning, no smile, no pleasant or even cordial greeting. After coming to take our drink order, he explained that there was a compressor issue affecting many of the draft taps (which happens, totally fine), but he did so in a very rude manner when he had to repeat himself due to someone not hearing the first time.
Following this, when food arrived, my wife received the wrong order (she clearly ordered a buffalo chicken sandwich, received the naanwich). After pleasantly notifying him, he made no offer and said that he would not have written it down incorrectly, asking if she was sure. In the interest of not being difficult, she insisted that she just accept the wrong order so we could all eat together. I was blown away that he did not offer to provide any compensation at all, not really any apology.
Other than the service, food was solid as always, and we do love the atmosphere. Hopefully this doesn't leave a sour taste and we'll plan to return in the...
