Me and my wife entered the pub quite excited. We were seated behind a corner and weren't served while seated there (20 minutes). We then decided to move to a corner that we were more visible and almost immediately we were served.

  1. This brings me to my first complaint. This restaurant has no idea where their customers are seated. They have a very weak service staff that is unable to remember who they seated and where they seated them.

We then ordered our drinks and food items, since we had some time to think about them. Unfortunately the first 2 choices of drinks I had turned out to be depleted. My wife, however, loved her drink (a house white wine).

  1. Complaint #2 - the server had no clue about the menu options. For example, we ordered fish tacos which either come baked or fried. The server did not as for either option upon ordering, nor did he offer any of the sides that come along with the item. This leads me to beleive that the staff do not know the menu and it's various options. Both meals came with various sides but nothing was offered.

The food was pretty good. Apps git delivered way in advance of mains and ample time was given. All dishes were plated warm and ready to eat. Delicious!! Must try the beef au dip and fish tacos.

  1. Complaint 3 - worker started sweeping floor around me as I ate. Continued to whistle loudly as he did that. Not much of a complaint here, just didn't make sense to me that you'd sweep around me although there are no other occupied seats near me.

Overall a strange experience. Loved the food and environment. Disliked the service and service people.

Thanks for...

I’ve been going to this location for a long time and just recently went yesterday which prompted me to write this review. I’m incredibly disappointed with the food we received.

I ordered the chicken wrap with fries, my hubs ordered the beef dip sandwich and we started with potato skins.

The whole menus price has gone up but like everything else, portion sizes and quality have gone down. So you’re now paying more for less.

Instead of two potatoes cut into 4 quarters, you get one cut into 8 for the skins.

They double breaded scraps of chicken breast for my chicken wrap. Honestly there was almost no chicken… it was just deep-fried breading. Like not even a full chicken finger. So i paid $20 for a tortilla, salad and deep fried breading?

My hubs got almost no meat in his sandwich either. It was maybe two thin slices of meat for the beef dip… the sandwich itself was just so tiny as well, at $20 a plate? The gravy also tasted burnt and was curdled, it wasn’t fresh at all.

I don’t know what’s happened here or who thought it was a good idea to run a business this way but we won’t be returning to this restaurant again. We understand price changes due to inflation but we don’t support the blatant theft of quality of food from the plate you’re paying more...

The service was terrible. Alicia spent very little time with us for having very few tables. She didn't explain the menu at all or what was on special. Our apatizer came out and we managed to get one bite in, burn the tops of our mouths raw and blistered before our main entrees came over to us with whom I assume was the manager on duty. We had to move onto our entrees immediately because the Buffalo chicken dip was well over 100 degrees - as if it had been microwaved too long which also explains why it tasted so dried out and not really dippable. The steak pie was really good and cooked to the right temperature. Alicia came over once to ask how our food was and I told her how badly burned my mouth was. She did not apologise, the manager did not apologise, there was nothing done to try and make our experience better. We tried to eat the appetizer after our main but it was still too hot, so we had it packed up. It's crazy that one valentine's day dinner has ruined eating for me for the rest of the week because of all the ruined raw skin on the roof of my mouth. Will I ever go back? I don't think so, nor will I be able to say much beyond the crappy service and warning people to finger their food to make sure it's at a safe temperature before...

My parents love this place and have been coming here to the Upper James location since it opened over 10 years ago. The food is consistently delicious and fresh as they say and over the years I've come from time to time and I would agree. It was my dad's birthday so of course we came to celebrate (he happened to be born on St. Patrick's Day so it's always a bit tough getting a table and they have a special menu that's only for that day but it's to be expected. The staff was helpful and kind with good service despite the chaos of a packed out place. We had to take the table on the patio which was chilly but thankfully they wrapped the patio with vapour barrier and had 3 propane heaters out there so we were nice and warm except for the feet where you could feel a bit of a chill but it was fine. We all ordered the same- Guinness steak pie with a pint of Guinness for my parents and a tea for me and hot chocolate for my wife. The food was excellent, the puff pastry on top was fresh, light and flaky. The steak was beautifully tender and well seasoned, accompanied by mixed vegetables and the famous Guinness sauce. It was our first time out at a restaurant as new parents and everything went well. We'll keep coming back here for years to come.

Decided to try a new restaurant tonight with my daughter. We were seated promptly when we got there and the restaurant was very busy. Our server came over to our table and with no introduction he asked if we'd like a drink, we gave our order and he swiftly went off to retrieve it. He returned after 5 mins to drop the drinks off and without a word swiftly left again. 10 mins later he returned to take our order, he was friendly but not personable, his customer service was lacking which put a damper on making me want to return to this restaurant. It's a pity because the food was actually very good. Meatloaf and mashed potatoes were hot and well seasoned, side veggies were a bit hard. Fish tacos were very filling, good fresh flavor but could use some spice.

We have been to Ye Olde Squire on Upper James a few times over the years and the food is always great and has been consistent. The service was good on this recent visit and everything came out on time. The prices are reasonable compared to other similar restaurants. We tried the Irish Nachos this time, they were really good, nice change using kettle cooked chips. For the mains we ordered the steak pie, comparable to a Scottish pie and the Fisherman’s platter. Both dishes were good and were enjoyed. The vegetables however could use some seasoning, they were a bit bland overall. If you’re ever in the area, stop in. Definitely a good restaurant worth checking out.
