Hing's — Restaurant in Kenora

Well, I waited for awhile before posting simply because I LOVE Hings so much, but it has still been bothering since it happened. I have been a loyal Hings customer for many many many years, I have recommended and sent business their way countless times over the years. However, the last time I ordered (Dec or Jan ) I was very disappointed. I called at 4pm on a Friday, I ordered 2 different combo plates and 2 egg rolls and requested to pick it up at 530pm. I assumed this would give plenty of time to make the order. At my pick up time, I was told by their waitress that they had been very busy and my order would likely be another 30 min, I decided to take a walk around town. When I returned 30 min later, I was told again by the waitress that my order had not been started yet, she stated "the cook is old, she cant make her go any faster ". and she said it would be another 45 min. I left again. When I returned 45 min later my order still wasn't complete so I waited around in the restaurant for another 15 to 20 min. While I waited in store, a family came in to place an order. One of the gentlemen had to use the washroom and was denied by a fellow who works there(possibly due to covid and no public restroom) The gentleman placed his order with the waitress and then asked her where he could find a washroom and she told him to use the one there, he seemed surprised and said "that guy" (pointing at the waiter) told him he couldn't use it and she responded very loudly that "he was not the boss". It was now around 715pm when my order was finally ready. When I went to pay, I asked the waitress if she would throw in the egg rolls for the long wait and I was sharply told that "if they did that, they would go broke". I was shocked at her lack of customer service skills and her snippy response but I was also starving by this time so I paid and I left. I haven't been back since. The food itself is awesome,, no complaints there, but something should be said about the awful way their waitress treats customers and other staff. Very poor customer service. I didnt think my asking for a free eggroll after waiting several hours for my food was too much to ask. I now order from Ho Ho, their food is delicious and I've never had an issue with them, I have placed orders for pick up several times now and never once have i had to wait longer than my requested pick up time. Now, when anyone asks about Chinese food here i tell them both places are great, but i also warn them that the service at Hings is horrendous and the wait for the food...

At 6pm on New Year's Eve we ordered Pork Chow Mein, Curry Shrimps, Chicken & mixed veg, Beef with mushrooms and soup for 3 from Hings on a credit card. We requested delivery for 8pm but, Hings does not deliver and suggested we use the local taxi service.

Instead we decided to pick-up at 8pm and then I had to wait 45 minutes for the order which they hadn't even started. Thank heaven we didn't use a taxi as this would have cost us even more than the $100 food bill. I kept being told the order would be ready soon and wasn't even offered a free cup of coffee while I waited, and waited and waited!

Once home and well past hungry, other than the curry shrimp, everything looked and tasted the same and all the dishes had the same vegetables and an abundance of onions and cheap cabbage. Even the Hot 'n Sour soup had cabbage. The Beef and mushroom had very little beef and hardly any mushrooms which appeared to be from a can anyway.

We had heard the food was better than Ho-Ho's (our previous go-to) but, it wasn't. Never again will we...

Best lightly battered shrimp anywhere! Can't go wrong with Hing's special. Ask for it with crispy shrimp.

Singapore chow mien is a favourite. Thin noodles, a light spicy bite. Delicious. And their special yet ca mien soup is wonderful. Made fresh when you order. Yummm. If you like spicy ask for their hot sauce on the side.

Had deep fried won ton at many restaurants all over. No one beats Hing's.

Been going there for decades. Never disappointed.
