I watched some foodie Youtubers who had recommended their viewers to try 滿意粥粉面 Very Good Congee & Noodle located inside King Square Shopping Centre located near 16th Avenue and Woodbine intersection in Markham, so I have decided to bring my parents to give this a try.
The restaurant is a good size with 5 or 6 booths, surrounded by tables for 2 or 4. It's modern, simple with clean interior with a forest birch background wall as one of the resto's wall.
Prices are pretty on par with other similar specialty wonton noodle shops which is $12 CDN + tax here at Very Good Congee & Noodle.
My parents ordered a bowl of shrimp wonton soup noodle and a bowl of assorted "boat son" congee to share. Meanwhile, I ordered a bowl of beef tendon soup noodle for myself.
My beef tendon arrived first and for some reason, the shrimp wonton noodles took quite a while before it arrived to my parents. Luckily, they got to try the assorted congee, otherwise, they will be watching me indulging my bowl of noods. LOL
The broth of my beef tendon noodle was clean, smooth and mixed with the marinated beef tendon sauce, it's the highlight of my bowl. The egg noodles were very refined, thin and fresh. However, compared to other noodle shops, the noods here seem to be less bouncy or less "song". I don't know if they exclude the soap water which other restaurants used so often to make the noods chewy. I can't conclude. Anyhow, the nood still fresh but less chewy.
Brownie points for this resto to sprinkled the "9 yellow" to the broth which is a nice touch and what an authentic wonton noods should include. Beef tendons were in abundance and they were perfect texture, not too hard, not too soggy, just the way I like it.
The chilli oil provided was fresh and smells so good. It's not too spicy but does the job.
The assorted congee was a disappointment. It doesn't have lettuce strands but more importantly, the toppings were lacking in variety and not much in proportion either. In many restaurants, assorted congee includes lots of squid, strips of pork, shrimps, lettuce strips and other ingredients. But here, it's lots of strands of pork that you see more in a century egg congee than in an assorted congee. There was only little bit of of squid, little bit of jellyfish, but there were no shrimps or other ingredients. It mainly lots of BBQ duck and strands of pork and that's about it. ONLY good thing about this bowl is the good viscosity of the congee, otherwise, this bowl of congee is a let down here, "NOT Very Good" if you want to play on words.
The shrimp wonton soup noodles that my parents ordered seem to be quite good and it comes with 5 shrimp wontons. The broth was clear, clean but flavourful. Lots of shrimp roe on top which is a rarity in many restaurants where most other places wouldn't bother to include shrimp roe.
The wonton was a good size, not too big, not too small, there was shrimp paste, then big wholesome shrimp with a hint of shrimp roe. Wonton is good here.
I do have to emphasize that the service is excellent here. The staff are hardworking, they never give you a hard time or never give us piss off faces like other typical restaurants. We asked for extra bowls to share, iced water and extra napkins and they obligated without any resistance, so that's a major plus.
Overall, I wouldn't say the noodles here are amazing, but it's typical and good, but not as hype or what other Youtubers hyping it up to be. Again, at the end of the day, everyone taste buds are subjective and different. It does...
Read moreWas driving around the neighborhood and decided to check out the new Kings Square shopping Center, appears to be 100% Asian leased. Many storefronts still not leased yet but appears to be promising as many small mom & pop type food places are have already opened and operating which brings me to this review and a separate review of Banh Mi House which is right next door
Started off with the fried bread rice rolls. Outer rice roll layer was thin and silky but the interior bread roll was dense and dry which leads to rigorous chewing.
Noodle soup with beef tendon was excellent. Their soup base was perfection, cinnamon, star anise, orange peel, etc, all flavors came together in one glorious flavor bomb. Hong Kong quality no joke.
Shrimp/mince pork dumpling in shrimp roe soup was another excellent dish. A generous sprinkling of shrimp roe gave the soup a nice authentic shrimpy flavor profile. The dumplings had a nice ratio of shrimp, minced pork and shredded black fungus with each bite.
I hope this quality remains consistent as usually a new restaurant will give extras to entice customers good word of mouth reviews and then the quality and ingredients used will slowly degraded.
Hurry, get off your couch, turn off your k-dramas and give this new place a try before it's too late.
Support the mom & pops, we're...
Read moreDo not order wonton noodles. Came here on a weekend at noon with a family of 6 people and waited an hour to get seated. I personally ordered the wonton with rice noodles and that tasted horribly. The soup was super bland. The wonton was not good (frozen wonton you can buy at the grocery store tastes better). The rice noodles absorbed all the soup and half way through the meal, I did not have much soup left (I had double the amount of noodles compared to soup ratio). The worst part was I ordered a side dish of $6 vegetables so I can eat it with my noodle soup, but that arrived last after I finished the meal (even though I rushed the veggie order 3 times). Also, it took a super long time for food to arrive for other members of my group, most people were done eating when 2 people received their food at the end. I also had to ask for the bill 3 times for the bill to actually arrive at my table. This restaurant definitely needs to improve on operations. In my opinion, wonton rice noodles would have tasted similarly or better at the food court than here. I had a horrible experience and I would never come back. I would mention that their beef dishes are better than the wonton dish I got. Those at my table who ordered beef noodles actually...
