TL:DR - If you're looking for delicious, authentic Banh Mi and great service, head straight to Banh Mi House.
Full review: I've spent some time in Hanoi over the years and so I'm always looking for authentic Vietnamese food spots in Toronto that bring me back to my time there. My wife and I were craving Banh Mi the other day and were so glad we found Banh Mi House.
The service here is excellent. The owner is super friendly and very personable. He took time to walk my wife and I through the different protein options and didn't try to oversell us on anything - he even recommended we get one sandwich to share since they're so big unless we're really hungry. You can immediately tell how passionate he is about his food and his desire to share it with the community. This man has true integrity.
The food itself was fantastic. We got the lemongrass pork Banh Mi combo which comes with a soup, a spring role, a Vietnamese sausage AND a drink for just under $6 extra. Where else can you get that kind of value? Everything is authentically Vietnamese through and through. Super fresh and very tasty. Good meat to bread ratio and the pate was so rich. I had a Vietnamese coffee and it was just as rich. I ended up going back for a second Banh Mi because it was just that good. The crispy pork belly is what I got for round two and is a definite must try.
My wife and I are super happy to have found this spot. The owner's passion for the food is infectious. Thanks so much for binging a piece of...
Read moreThis past Sunday morning, I visited Banh Mi House to try their grilled lemongrass pork baguette. I waited in line, placed my order, and noticed that the gentleman behind me ordered the same sandwich.
As I watched the chef prepare the meat, another staff memberâwho I believe may have been the owner or a managerâstruck up a friendly conversation with the customer behind me, praising the sandwich and suggesting he add fresh chilis. Meanwhile, I observed a young woman with glasses assembling his sandwich, generously piling on the pork and fresh vegetables before handing it to him.
When she made my sandwich, I was shocked at how little care went into it. The amount of pork was a fraction of what I had just seen used in the previous sandwichâbarely visible once the bread was closed. Worse still, when I got home and unwrapped it, the meat consisted of 2 slices of pure pork fat and burnt ends. For $10, what I received was essentially soggy bread and vegetables. It was completely inedible.
To be served after someone who ordered after me was disappointing enough, but watching their sandwich come out loaded while mine was noticeably smaller and poorly made felt frankly insulting. Consistency in food and service is important - treating customers differently is upsetting. This is my honest review - I cannot recommend this...
Read moreI'm sorry but I'm confused as to how this is good banh mi...please go to Vietnam or even Australia as this is nothing close to authentic? The cross section of this banh mi is like 65% bread and 35% filling. So confused about the ratings from Google and Reddit.
Please learn from the photos I am posting which is from Banh Mi from Hanoi, Vietnam.
Replying to their response: I'm sorry you feel that this is bashing, but it should be taken as room to improve. I'm not only talking about your bread which I don't believe is even a genuine response - as I have had the same texture Vietnamese bread in non-tropical regions.. Allow me to clarify that the cold cut flavours are not authentic, the proportion of filling:bread is expensive and frankly disappointing to a genuine Vietnamese palate.
If you order something from the menu, it should be genuinely fulfilled to a restaurants' standard. I don't think the customer should be at fault for not requesting to meet the standards of a 4+ star reviewed banh mi shop. e.g. Does this mean everyone who doesn't 'just ask' received a...
