Excellent B.B.Q. House 味香园 — Restaurant in Markham

So I finally made it here to try it. I’ve been to their competitor but today we decided to buy from both to do a comparison and I have to say this place won. I was surprised as most reviews I’ve read favoured HKS. Now I only got the bbq pork so I can’t say for the others. I did find the soup given here was much better. Not just broth. Win here Now the amount of meat is more from HKS and it is still very good bbq pork. So HKS wins. The bbq pork on rice is the same price $9 My photo was after I ate a couple of pieces so it may not look as full as it should be btw 😬 But If you buy per lb. It’s $12 here and $11 at HKS.. The meat was more tender here Extra wins. It’s a toss up really. I don’t think you can go wrong with either. Test it yourself. Honestly they are both amazing I am curious about other places so stay tuned March 2025 So I returned and the line up was shorter. Now 2 things originally I thought the quality of the meat was more tender for the bbq pork here but the quantity was a bit less but I was mistaken!!! We typically order the roast pork and free run chicken and roast pork and bbq duck on rice. The order is plentiful. They do not skip out on loading it up. The roast pork depending on how much the pig is left can be from any part so take a look before ordering if you want a specific cut because if it is a new pig that came out he is not going to cut half the pig off so that you can get ur specific cut (for a rice dish). My parents like this place because they are less salty than the others and you get good portions. The rice combos comes with a decent size bowl of soup and bok choy. The free run chicken is pretty tender and tastes so good with the ginger and onion sauce it comes with. And the bbq duck is nice and fairly less fatty than other places. And it seems that they at least ensure you get some meat with the duck. I remember another place just gave us mainly bones. We also tried their bbq pork, it was pretty good. Not too fatty not too lean. The owners are the same ones that operated the bbq place near brimley and sheppard! Other customers in line told us and they were ecstatic he is back, i told others where they are now and they now come to first markham to get their bbq now. Lol. I think they only accept cash. I tried this place for the first time yesterday - and never again - poor quality meats and poor customer service !! I ordered the 1 lb roasted pork, 1/2 lb BBQ pork and half a BBQ duck.

I asked to see the meat that the guy picked for me, but he picked, cut and boxed the meats in the super fast speed that I was unable to see anything. The owner (I assumed) punched in the total $$ super fast that I was unable to see the price by item. Great technique to fool the customers!!

1. duck was very fatty, maybe with half of the edible meat only. Heavy on MSG.
2. BBQ pork was incredibly DRY like cardboard with no meat taste. Looked like the meat that should have been disposed of - not for humans. Each slice was cut to about 1/2” thick. They gave me 1 lb versus 1/2 lb as I had requested. I can accept a little over but not doubled !!
3. roasted pork was ok - still dry but at least more edible. Skin was crispy. Gave me way more than requested also.

After eating a couple of bites of each meat, I was so furious that I threw all the meats into the green bin - an expensive dinner. Didn’t even think of taking pictures for this review at the time. I DO NOT...
