At the beginning, I was happy to learn Lucullus Bakers have opened up in Downtown Markham. However, after a few visits, I would prefer if another bakery opens up nearby. For a place that wants to give an impression that they are an high-end bakery with their beautiful décor, they certainly ain't because of their nickel and dime operations and rude staff. They charge for anything they simply can. I bought a few items and asked if I can have another bag to split up the items and the staff gave me a hard time stating that they are only supposed to only give out one bag for each transaction. Also, some baked goods are packed better in boxes as they will get squished in bags but guess what? They charge for boxes too! I bought at least $40 worth of buns and egg tarts and still they wanted to charge me for a box. No other bakery will charge for boxes and simply gives you a choice whether you want it in a bag or box or they will be so happy to split it up in different bags if you are buying baked goods said for a bigger group.
Forget also paying by credit card. They used to charge $1+ to even use a credit card that they opted out of making it available but still charge 25 cents? for debit when we all know most business don't even charge for anything to use debit and debit cost what? A few cents. It is best to bring cash if you decide to visit them!
The staff is quite rude and acts like you are stealing from them. Were they given directives to act so cheap? The place also hides their napkins so you need to beg their employees for an extra napkin.
So for such a fancy bakery, they really do not fit the bill and hope they revisit their directives to be a more friendlier place. In addition, their baked goods are expensive to begin with. If it wasn't nearby and for convenience sake, I wouldn't visit them. Also if you go late, barely anything will...
Read moreLucullus has the best coconut cream buns (CCB) at the Downtown Markham location. The texture of the cream is thick, not runny like other bakeries. They also have a sugar bun that's very good. Otherwise, their selection is pretty common with other bakeries. My reason for the 3 Stars is the inconsistency among the branches. The CCB cream texture taste different if you buy a CCB from the Kennedy or Markville location. At the Fairview location, it cost 50 cents more ($ 3.25) so I refused to buy it plus the size was SMALLER. I could have finished it in two bites
The counter lady at the Kennedy location automatically charged me 15 cents for a bag that wasn't offered to me so I went back from my parked car to ask for a refund. At least the other locations will ask if you need one. I also like the Japanese Red Bean Bun but that's not offered at the Downtown Markham location. The Markville location offers parchment paper sheets to cover your selection tray but the other branches do not.
The Kennedy location has a decent and thick Wintermelon pastry (Old Wives Cake) but it's not offered at the DM location.
In summary, 5 Stars for the Coconut Cream Bun at the Downtown...
Read moreI am forced to give this location 1 star when it does NOT deserve any star ratings! I was near this location and definitely craved some pastries as I have thoroughly enjoyed the coconut bear claw from a different location (Halton Hills). I was excited along with my family. When it was time to pay, the cashier, Yan, was extremely rude. We wanted to dine in and not take it to go. Decided to pack the whole pastries we bought. It is common sense to ask if the customer wants to dine or take it to go. I said to her that you didn't ask us if wanted it for here or not, you just packed our stuff. She brought one plate for our 3 coconut bear claw to warm up and that's how we all ate it, it just one plate. No remorse of her actions. There is no manager at site where one can express the experience. I have attempted to contact management through the website and Instagram with zero response. I am am disappointed. There's a consistency with the Yan's behaviour anmanagement are not doing anything about it. I have ZERO comments. I hate writing bad reviews but I couldn't resist with this because she was...
