Situated between Warden and Steeles, the restaurant is a in a pretty busy plaza. Coming around on Sun at 3pm, the plaza wasn't too busy, but there were not a lot of parking spots (I can't imagine how hectic it can get during busy times). The restaurant wasn't too busy yet, so we were able to get a seat right away. Luckily we came right on time because the restaurant was starting to get more people after 10 mins sitting down. The menu isn't too huge, and features mainly drinks, appetizers, their rice noodle rolls and congees to choose from. I ordered: - C9 Shredded pork and preserved egg Congee ($5.50): The bowls were pretty big haha. We could definitely tell how fresh the pork was. It was very soft and flavourful; meaning it wasn't just frozen pork. The congee itself is simple and doesn't have salt (which you can add if you like). There was a good amount of preserved egg and pork altogether which is nice to know this place isn't stingy with portions. - S6 Dough Stick ($2.25): It came with 6 pieces (one cut into 6 pieces) and I can tell it was very fresh as there was a good amount of flavour and crunch which could only be achieved if it was made fresh. - R4 Shrimp and Chives rice noodle roll ($5.25): I had a bit more expectations for this because this is what they specialized in (and it was on their restaurant name). The portion of it was the usual compared to other asian restaurants, and it was stuffed with shrimp. However, I had to say it was pretty plain. There wasn't much flavour overall and Ive had similar ones in other restaurants that had a lot more flavour with the need of soy sauce. Kind of disappointing considering their menu had their rice noodle roll on their front page. Our bill was under $30 with taxes/tips which is great if you're eating on a budget, and yet want something to fill you up. TIP: They only take cash IG: Ayenomz

I first tried this location in person when it first opened pre-pandemic, and it was okay, but I hadn't been back because it was such a small space and so busy, making for a long wait to get a table. Today, we opted for takeout, ordering rice noodle rolls, congee, and a sweet crueller. This was done via their online ordering system, which was pretty convenient. One sore point is that the system didn't tell us the wait times until after we placed the order (i.e., if the wait times are too long and would deter you from ordering, you won't know that until after the ordering is done). As a note, there is also a discount for paying in cash. I personally enjoyed the rice noodle rolls the most (the dried shrimp ones were my fave of the bunch), which makes sense since that's what they're known for. The congee was only okay; I liked that the portions weren't huge, so we could try several types of congee, but they weren't super flavourful. That said, it was still good, and our meal was fine overall! Happy Congee at Middlefield and Steeles remains our go-to for congee/rice noodle rolls/fried dough sticks, but Yin Ji Chang Fen is a good option to add to the mix, especially because the Warden location is closer for us to get to.

Our favourite chang fen stop! Family friendly. Service (Family Friendly): During our latest dine in experience, the staff asked if we needed a highchair for my daughter which was very attentive and considerate. We were brought tea and told to order from their qr code on the table. The ordering process was relatively simple, but you will need data on your phone as there is no wifi. As my daughter is still young (3yo), we tend to avoid eating at small restaurants during peak meal times (lunch and dinner rush) as she can eat pretty slow, so that usually means the staff are on break. Even so, the service we received was still surprisingly fast! Food: We've tried a variety of dishes, and ate in and bought for takeout. Very fresh, everything comes out piping hot. Our favourite is the dough stick rice noodle roll. The doughstick is crispy and light, not heavy and dense like many other places. The rice noodle are smooth and silky soft, evident of their years of practice to perfect it. The congee are flavourful and have the perfect consistency, not too thick and not too watery. They also have a selection of dim sum which was also pretty good.

This place, a favorite for those in the know, specializes in quick, delicious chang fen and noodles that won't break the bank. Among the offerings, the rice roll with crispy fried dough and the truffle paste rice roll with mushrooms stand out, serving not just food, but memories on a plate. The interior might strike some as plain or even dated, but for me, it’s part of its charm. It’s a reminder of a time when simplicity was cherished, and the focus was squarely on the food and the community it brought together. This old-school vibe, increasingly rare amid today’s sleek and modern eateries, offers a unique kind of comfort, a quick escape to a world where things move a bit slower, and the food tastes like it was made with a dash more care. Despite its unassuming appearance, the quality of the food here is consistently impressive. Each dish is a proof that true culinary excellence doesn’t always come with frills. The comfort found in devouring four or five dishes here is unparalleled, leaving you in a state of contentment so profound, you might just find yourself dozing off, lulled by the satisfaction of a belly well fed.

Simple yet delicious! This restaurant practically serves only two dishes: Chang Fen and congee. Both are very nicely executed. Chang Fen is very fresh, soft and silky smooth, full of tender fillings like beef, pork, shrimp etc. Many of these contain garlic chive sprouts which yields a crunchy texture, and a mild sweet aroma, contrasting with the rest of the rice roll. Very nicely done! Congee is good, similar to other congee places. It alone would not stand out from the crowd. Milk tea is not bad at all. Very rich in flavour and texture. The quality is comparable to that found at Marathon Café. The small establishment is always busy, and the servers are often rushing through orders and cleaning up the tables. If one ever find service slow, start tapping away at a cellphone, it would prompt immediate attention from the servers. As the saying goes: eat or get off the table…or something similar.

Was doing groceries nearby and stumbled on this place for some takeout. Been a long time since had some Cheng fan. When I saw street style cheng fan on menu, I had some hopes of childhood flavors with all the sauces . The Cheng fan itself was made quite well, very bouncy and freshly made, not like those rock hard ones from super market. Only critique is it didn’t have the red hot sauce I associate with street Cheng fan, but that’s pretty minor as can add my own easily, where if the Cheng fan sucked then there wouldn’t have been any sauce to save it. The congee was very well made at the price point, the pork slices were not boiled to death and fresh still. The fried fish skin was spectacular for what you paid for it, it even came with a side of soup which was nice touch. Highly recommended place for cheap but high quality food
