I worked in Rexdale for a while several years ago and up there in Ford Nation there are many Afghani restaurants so I'm familiar enough with Afghani food.
I've been here only once and didn't have high expectations as I showed up too late for lunch and too early for supper...so no one was there and I wondered if they were even open. The owner was very friendly and greeted my ever so politely. The place is very small, quite cozy really and immaculate in cleanliness.
I've been around people who can grill meat but this gentleman is something out of the ordinary. He is the grand wizard of grilling, he's a mad genius and be nice enough with him and he'll let you touch the sleeves of his robe. This is real Afghani-style cooking with these skewers about four feet long to cook your food with!
One of these guys that takes genuine care in the quality of his food and establishment. He'll stick around and check up on you while you eat as he wants feedback. He cares. One of those type of business owners that are becoming rarer in these fast-paced times.
I ordered the Shami Kabob Dinner and at $11.00 a whole bunch of food was brought to my table (surprisingly fast!) including an Afghani-style naan bread with sesame seeds on top. Delicious. Insanely tasty. The kabobs were just to die for. The salad was fresh and mouth-watering and the amount of rice wasn't overwhelming such that it was clear he wasn't "bulking up" the meal. And basmati rice too! I ordered the spicy chutney sauce which is olive oil-based and it was stupendous. I could barely finish the meal without popping a shirt button.
For the wife I bought the Chicken Breast Kabob Dinner and upgraded her side order of rice with the Qabilee Rice which had carrots, raisins and almonds sprinkled on top. (See what I mean about this guy? Who thinks of doing this? He's a mad genius!). Although she gave me the "Thanks honey, but I'm not really that hungry tonight" line the moment I popped the tray on her take-out she went at it like a hungry little 4'10" brunette shark!
Meals for both of us, the wife couldn't quite finish, came in at like $27.00 all in. And do you know what? That's not bad in 2018!!
Brand new establishment, no pictures or lunch specials to post on the front window just yet, I expect our Afghani friend new to Milton will succeed.
He deserves it.
(Oh, and the garlic breath you will get after you eat here is what the Mujahideen used to kick the Soviets out of...
Read moreOrdered party pack of food for 6 people. First of all, owner was incredibly rude and obnoxious simply because I made a request due to special diet. When food arrived, tray of meat was practically empty. Only a handful of of dry, unmarimated small cut pieces of chicken scraping the bare bottom of the tray. $75 later and what an embarassment to our guests!! First reaction was, where did the food fly? What will the guests think? Is this some kind of a prank?
This, along with other scenerios such as inconsistently made food, vindictive biased service aforementioned above, one worker pressuring my husband to pay cash on several occasions and one incident when the same worker asked my husband what his religion was (I won't go into specifics). I do have all these incidents documented in case I have to report this business to the CRA or the Human Rights Commission.
With lack of gratitude, dispicable atttitude, and zero business sense towards repeat customers, we will be taking our hard earned money somewhere else!
P.S. next time please don't compare your skimmer rinky dinky baby business to a multi billion dollar corporate giant like Tim Hortons. To entertain your kinder brain, its like comparing a mosquito to a dinosaur. When you have been in operation for less than a year, don't start racing ahead thinking so high and mighty of yourself. No need to interrogate with questions about a customers previous orders from you and make that an argument. You're operating a food service for a personal living (your gain, NOT mine). You need business. I do NOT need your food. Therefore, no need to act like you are enforcing judicial law here or providing a volunteer service. (The owner knows exactly what UNGRATEFUL comments he made to warrant this reply. His true colours came to light).
Plenty of eateries in Milton guys! Keep moving...
Read moreDespite ordering two grill meals – the Sultani Grill and the Shami Kabob – my experience fell short of expectations, especially considering my previous encounters with Afghan cuisine elsewhere.
First and foremost, the freshness of the salad was questionable. It lacked the vibrant flavors and crispness one would expect. Additionally, the white sauce, meant to complement the meal, was an odd concoction of sweet and sour notes that didn't quite hit the mark.
Moving on to the main dishes, the rice was passable, but nothing exceptional. However, the bread was a letdown. Thick and dense, I split it apart in order to enjoy, detracting from the overall dining experience.
The beef skewers were disappointingly dry, necessitating an excessive amount of sauce to salvage any semblance of flavor. While the filet mignon steak bites were marginally better, they still fell short of expectations. Despite being flavorful, they were marred by a slightly chewy texture.
On a positive note, the online ordering process was efficient, and the food was prepared in a timely manner. However, swift service alone cannot compensate for the lackluster quality of the dishes.
With subpar salads, lackluster sauces, and underwhelming grilled items, it missed the mark in delivering the authentic Afghan dining experience I...
