I tried a varied selection of their dishes and my verdict is that the flavour is just not there. Everything was very mid: starting with the crispy shrimp sushi roll, the flavour was very bland. The crispy shrimp sitting on top of the segments were the only good thing about it, and still it was nothing to write home about. It's your basic tempura shrimp, which you can find pretty much anywhere. The sushi itself is a roll of disappointment, the rice is has very little or no sushi seasoning, avocado barely there, and it all just tasted like cucumber. Maybe if they used seaweed to roll it then there could have been some much needed flavour, but I guess they wanted to make the sushi wrapping white.
Next up is the fish fillet and asparagus with rice. There is some mild spice and seasoning coating the outside, but the flavour did not infuse into the meat of the fish. The fish is flakey and soft, but a bit dry. The roasted asparagus and rice... Taste exactly like how they sound, even though they were really deceptively creative with their menu description.
The shrimp bowl was the best thing we've ordered, it had a weird name (I think the word shroomami was in it, or I may be thinking of another dish). The shrimp and veggies - which consisted of yams, broccoli, and cauliflower amongst others - were fried in batter. I suppose it defeats the purpose of a healthy salad bowl, but at least it tasted decent. The broccoli rice and kale (there was too much kale, it took up most of the volume of the bowl) was definitely on the sour side. Too much vinegar in the dressing, but better to eat sour and salty kale than bland kale. The broccoli rice ended up absorbing too much of the dressing and was more seasoned than the rest of the salad, but overall this was the best dish in a line of subpar dishes.
Finally, the dessert. I ordered that birthday cake looking one. 12 dollars. It was disgusting. Way, way too sweet. No subtlety in the flavour at all, the cake tastes like box mix and it kind of felt... Stale? The texture was dense, but with the amount of sugar in the icing the density just made it too much. Every thing was just so, so overwhelmingly sweet it was sickening. If you're curious about this flavour, go buy the cheapest iced cupcake from Walmart you can find.
The waiters had fine attitudes, and the wait time wasn't too long, about 7 minutes. Bathrooms are small, I think 4 or 5 stalls, are decently maintained, and they use a fancy cold pressed olive oil handsoap from Cucina which is very lovely. Overall, I wouldn't come back here again. I recommend Earl's to people who are...
Read moreI had a very disappointing experience at Earl's this past Saturday that has soured my opinion of the restaurant - I will not be returning, especially not for brunch. My friends and I arrived for brunch for an 11:30am reservation, and from the moment we were seated, things felt off. One of my friends was seated first, and without requesting anything, a bottle of water was brought to her. We didn't think much of it at the time as we noticed other tables in our area also had bottled water. When we requested more water, we were again brought bottled water. At the end of the meal, we noticed that there were carafes of water set aside of the room that were not brought to any tables in our section. To our surprise, we were charged for the bottled water we had not requested.
The service was subpar as well. We were seated for a very long time before a server came to introduce herself and take our orders. When the food finally arrived, it was underwhelming. The potatoes, which I had been looking forward to, were crunchy on the outside but still undercooked on the inside - very disappointing.
However, the most frustrating part of the experience occurred when we recieved our bills. Despite the brunch menu stating happy hour pricing was available until noon, we were charged a higher price for our meals. When we inquired about this, we explained we that we had arrived well before noon and our food came out around 12:30pm. After the server spoke with the manager, she informed us that our order had been entered into the system at 12:06pm making us ineligible for the happy hour pricing. This explanation felt disingenuous, as we waited a considerable amount of time before even seeing a server, let alone actually being served. Also, 12:06pm was the time the order was entered into the system and sent to the kitchen, not the time our server started taking our order. We also asked her clarifying questions due to dietary restrictions which took some time to confirm. If our order was placed well past 12pm we wouldn't have had an issue with this; however, we felt that the manager giving the reasoning of the order being just 6 minutes past was a cheap excuse.
This experience left us with the impression that Earl's intentionally has their servers take orders past noon when they have a reservation close to the end of the happy hour just to get customers to pay the higher prices. While we all have visited Earl's before, this visit was a significant letdown and has tainted our opinion of...
Read moreToday I went to this restaurant (Earls Kitchen at the Square One mall in Mississauga, ON) for my team’s Christmas luncheon. We were seated promptly. So far so good. However, as the time went by our experience became stranger. Our server took some time to get to our table. She didn’t introduce herself to us and she was borderline rude; a little abrupt and ill-mannered when she took our orders. She was impatient with us. The restaurant wasn’t that busy. There was quite a few empty tables so she was not rushed off her feet. The largest seated table was a party of about 15-20 people in the restaurant that she was not responsible for. Our table of 6 was the second largest in the room. Maybe she did state her name and I didn’t hear her because I was so taken aback by her attitude.
I must say that our drinks and meals were delicious and very tasty. As you can see from the pictures, presentation was ok. I had to ask another wait staff for black pepper for my Cajun Chicken Alfredo because there wasn’t any on the table because our server dropped off our meals and abruptly left the table without asking if we needed anything else. Needless to say, the service did not complement the food.
The strangest thing happened as we were wrapping up our luncheon. The manager came to our table, introduced himself as the manager and asked if he could take my glass. I agreed, since we were wrapping up and I thought he was collecting all the remaining dishes our server left behind on the table. The strangest part was, mine was the only glass he removed from the table while my other colleagues glasses, that were also empty, some more than mine, were left behind. 🤔🤔 I ask my colleague who was sitting next to me did she noticed what had happened and she too thought it strange. I must let you know that I was the only African American sitting at the table. 🤔🤔 I don’t want to call it what it looked like to me, henceforth the reason why I stated it as strange at the beginning of this statement. Thinking about it now, it was like a scene from Criminal Minds or CSI where a police officer scoops up a criminal’s utensils to obtain and isolate their DNA for evidence.
I left the restaurant in disbelief 🫢. Feeling disgusted and perturbed at the thought that prejudice can be so bold. I’ve eaten at this location before and did not experience such boldness at such a fine establishment. I will never forget this day and vow that I will never to return to this location or any other Earl’s Kitchen...
