This was our first time at the restaurant after seeing it a few times in passing. We made a reservation for 2 and the person on the phone asked if we were celebrating anything in particular. We mentioned that it was for a birthday dinner.
We got to the restaurant for dinner around 6pm on Saturday evening. There weren't too many other patrons yet. The server told us that we had to scan a QR code to get the menu. Unfortunately, the cell reception is a bit spotty the further into the restaurant you are seated so it made pulling up the menu a hassle. The server didn't even ask us what we would like for beverages. We had to ask for hot water and he came back out with two bottled waters. After reiterating that we wanted hot water "like for tea but without the tea bag", he came back with two glasses of hot water. But since it wasn't in a tea cup, there was no way for us to hold onto the glass without burning our fingers and hands. This was the precursor for the horrible meal and service that was to come.
Even though they were only about three other tables with people when we ordered (meaning the restaurant wasn't even at peak operation), the food took a while to get to our table. Especially since we ordered an appetizer, which came shortly before the main. We ordered the mixed appetizer, which had baba ganoush, hummus, muhammara, and an eggplant salad. For $26, this "dip" they only included 2 pieces of bread. This was not enough bread for the amount of dip. Also a bit overpriced for what you get.
For the main entree, we ordered the smoke meat for 2, which had lamb shank, brisket, chicken leg and wings for $70. Unfortunately, for a bbq restaurant, most of this platter was subpar. Firstly, even though the platter was served in some metal tray thing, all of the food was only mildly lukewarm, like it was barely reheated and not newly cooked. For reference, our hot waters that had been sitting out on the table for about 10 minutes was still hotter than any of the food that was served. You would expect a bbq place that focuses on its meats to be served piping hot. Taste-wise, the chicken was overly seasoned and extremely salty. The lamb shank was decently flavoured but the room temperature of the meat was off-putting. The brisket had no flavour and was bland. There were some sides of potatoes (too salty) and yellow rice (bland) and corn on the cob (ok).
The last impression was when we tried to get the bill; we tried to get the attention of multiple servers who were either too busy staring off in space or chatting with other servers.
For an almost $100 meal pre-tax and tip, the dinner was very disappointing and sort of ruined the birthday vibe. Even though they originally asked us the reason for the reservation, there was not a single mention from the server about the birthday (which is fine, but then why ask during reservations?). The high Google ratings are extremely misleading because that is completely opposite to what our experience was. Several friends have asked us about this restaurant in the days afterwards, and unfortunately we cannot recommend this...
Read moreI visited Eat Meat on Friday, September 27, 2024, at 3 PM with my pregnant wife and our 3-year-old child. When we arrived, there was no one to greet us at the entrance, and we waited for about 3 minutes. Finally, a staff member named Anmul came over, but her initial reaction left me confused. She gave us a strange look that made us feel uncomfortable. She eventually took us to a table and instructed us to scan a QR code to view the menu.
We were ready to order and signaled to her multiple times, but Anmul ignored us at least 4 times. I noticed that she was being very polite to the table next to us, but her attitude toward us made it seem like we were receiving charity food. It felt like she was discriminating against us, although I can’t say for certain whether it was due to our race or religion.
At 3:15 PM, she finally came to take our order, but that was the last interaction we had for a while. We patiently waited for 30 minutes, but my pregnant wife and young child were struggling with hunger. I approached Anmul to ask about our food, and she said she would check, but another 10 minutes went by with no update. By 3:55 PM, we had no choice but to leave the restaurant without having received our food. My son and pregnant wife were close to fainting from hunger at this point.
As we were leaving, Anmul argued with me, claiming that the delay was due to issues in the kitchen, but she never communicated this to us earlier. The lack of respect and the feeling of discrimination we experienced are entirely her fault. Other staff members were also just standing around, doing nothing to assist.
The way we were treated makes me wonder if this establishment’s policy is to discriminate against certain religion or races. I was paying for my food just like everyone else. Why were we treated as if we were less important than other customers?
My wife and I are still interested in tasting the food here, but only if Anmul apologizes for her disrespectful behavior, and if the establishment promises to treat all customers with equal respect irrespective to their religion or race...
Read moreI first heard of Eat Meat from an instagram reviewer. We live about 400km away from Mississauga, but we come often to the area, so we put the restaurant on our 'want to go list'. The day was finally today (5 January 2025). We arrived at the restaurant just before lunch and were greeted warmly and seated. The waitress was delightful! We loved her enthusiasm and easy-going style.
We ordered a mix appetizer, beets salad, and a smoked plate for two. Everything was good. And despite the high star count, the great flavors, and the wonderful bread, I have a few constructive observations.
The mixed appetizer came with Hoummous, Baba ghanouj, mhammara, and a Russian salad. Everything was delicious, but the Russian salad was out of place. The flavor profile did not match that of the other 3 items. It could be replaced by olives, or olive salad, or something less Slavic (don't get me wrong, it was good but not in this combo)
The meat was nicely flavored, but it was a bit dry, which is normal for smoked meats like this. Other smoked meats like the traditional New York or Montreal smoked meat are not dry because they're pickled and steamed to heat. I wouldn't change anything in the recipe, but I would serve it with a bowl of au jus, and I believe with this it would be just out of this world. The restaurant did provide 6-7 sauces, but these didn't help moisten the meat.
The washrooms were dingy. Big points for having a bidet shower, but the overall state of the washrooms was not nice. My wife complained that there was a plunger in one sink and that the space was in a general state of funk. I visited the men's washroom and found similar conditions, dingy sinks, open trashcan with paper on the floor, and walls and floors needing attention.
Despite the observations, we will return to the restaurant with our whole family, and we unreservedly recommend the...
