a friend recommended this place so we decided to try it today ...we wanted food for the PPV tonight...we got there at 11h32 .they were open ..we stood there waiting for someone to come but no one came ..we heard a woman in the back I guess she was talking on the phone but didn't bother to come ...then a man came in and took a box of patties put in on the counter and waited as well ..now you have 3 customers while talking away on your phone not giving a damn about your customers..I finally decided to ring the bell..even that didn't make them budge right away...after maybe 7 minutes a young lady comes and stands in front of the cash where the man is ..he mentions something but she's completely unphased by all this...he pays and goes..now it's finally time to order ..I wanted pineapple chicken and my boyfriend asks for jerk chicken...she goes in the back..phone rings..she answers then comes to the front to tell us that there's no fried chicken ready and that it will take 20 minutes or so to prepare..we didn't want to wait and decided to leave ...Well Boom J's the lack of customer service and the fact that the food that we wanted wasn't available because you didn't fry chicken .made you lose a first and last...
Read moreDon't kid your self... the quality and quantity is right here!!!! Oxtail not spicy and you can taste the rice and peas.
The food is priced accordingly. Don't forget there is a small and large size meal.
Dinner for 2 and great variety of drinks and food.
If you had a bad experience it can depend on the chef at the time. You need to give it an other try and you'll be surprised.
*Update
So I go to many restaurants on and off the island and I can say that I have yet to find a Carribean restaurant that can match this place. I have tried just about every single one minus the Haitian Creole restaurants as their style does not fall into the heavy beef/ jerk chicken style we love about Carribean restaurants.
2 x large Ox Tail dish with 2 drinks. Will run you 40$+ BUT the amount of food you get can feed 4 people haha! I cannot stress that the person serving the food makes the difference that many other reviewers are not noticing. I have gone here since they opened and I still go back even though I live in T.M.R lol. Yes it's a drive and a half but it's well worth it. Think Theo isn't there anymore but the I still love the food! Highly recommended if you want to comatose after...
Read moreTo give a 3 or a 4? I would give it a 3.5 but felt generous. I had a boneless chicken roti here. I am trying to find an equivalent to the (IMO) legendary Island Foods version from Toronto. So my expectations are high. This is the closest I've come to a tender flaky and tasty roti shell, with 'wet' chicken inside... I mean it's juicy and tasty and not just dry chicken and potato. It looked a mess and my heart sank a bit, but the taste of the roti did make me happy. It''s not perfect, but it's pretty good. One thing that made my heart sink a bit was the sound of the microwave being used to 'reheat' my roti. Sigh. I guess low volume places have to resort to it, but it's not a plus in my book.
As for Boom J's itself, the place is low key and no frills. bar stool seating and a few tables in the corner. It's not going to be a place to bring a first date. Several steep stairs to enter the place makes this wheelchair inaccessible. Street parking only.
New location in Ville Emard is now open. Great addition...
