On June 14, 2025, two friends and I dined at Enoteca Monza Pizzeria Moderna located on McGill College Avenue in downtown Montreal. Below is our experience at this location.
We requested being seated upstairs, and once seated, our waitress, provided us with a cocktail menu and a dinner menu for each of us. We decided and placed our cocktail orders. Minutes later, the drinks were served. One of them, a Margarita, served in a martini glass was poorly rimmed with salt - uneven and only half of the circumference of the glass was coated.
Minutes after placing our dinner orders, we noticed complimentary bread had not been served to us. We asked the waitress for bread and were informed that Monza, at least the McGill location, no longer provides complementary bread to its patrons, but nonetheless she would look into it and fulfill this request.
The complimentary bread never arrived, nor were we informed by waitress that Monza would still not provide us with same. We were eluded, after several reminders, that the bread was being prepared. To our surprise, what did occur was the removal of our side plates from our table, along with our empty cocktail glasses minutes later without being asked whether we wanted another round of drinks or not. So, through the entire meal we drank water. We hoped the waitress would recognize her error and offer us some service which she is getting paid to provide.
Our orders arrived. My steak requested be prepared medium was almost rare the further I cut into it. The broccolini, if you could call it that, were limp and soggy. The sun-dried tomatoes advertised as part of the dish were substituted with two pieces of sweet red pepper without an explanation. To go along with this disappointing meal was peppercorn sauce which was extremely salty.
After we ate our meals, and a long wait thereafter, the waitress came back to clear our empty plates from the table. She did not ask us if we wanted dessert or coffee or tea, etc. I requested the dessert menu. The waitress said she would be right back, and we asked, "With the bread?" But she just turned and walked away. There were at least 4 other servers walking around upstairs and not one of them could help this waitress out ? By helping her, it helps the client. After all being part of a wait staff is like a team. The better they do the more money they will make. Would you be better to help a fellow server or the client never return ?
We received the dessert menus, asked questions about the dessert choices and entered our orders; Tiramisu cake, cheesecake topped with berries, and a chocolate chip cookie topped with a scoop of ice cream. When the desserts arrived, the cheesecake had no berry toppings, the Tiramisu had a chunk missing and lay on its side looking messy on the plate, and I did not have a full scoop of ice cream on my cookie.
In summary, you do not say you can deliver on an item when you can’t, nor is it the patron's job to be forward and ask the waitress for items that should have been common knowledge for her. If management no longer provides complimentary bread, servers should adhere to this policy as opposed to making an empty promise - we would have considered ordering an appetizer from the menu. If cocktail glasses are empty, ask whether another is required or whether a soft drink is preferred with the meal. Advise the client of side order substitutions as the person may not like or be able to eat the replacement.
Another item worth mentioning is the women's bathroom. It is out dated and was not clean. The cleanest stall had a broken toilet seat. The restaurant dining area is aesthetically pleasing but the women’s bathroom really...
Read moreMy husband and I dined here for a late dinner (around 9:30pm) and upon entry, the restaurant looked and smelled great. The patio was slammed, so we opted to eat inside. First, we were placed next to a very large and loud party (which ended up being the least of our problems). Our server arrived and we ordered drinks and appetizers. He was clearly busy (which is understandable) however he didn’t seem to be writing anything down which doesn’t help. I had to repeat my drink order three times and even that took forever to get. 30 minutes went by without any other visit from our server, and no sign of the appetizers. A table that was sat after us also got their main courses during that time so we began to get a bit irritated. Our server was clearly in the weeds and was handling separate bills for the very large party next to us. Again, understandable, but a quick visit to the table to check in and he would have noticed we had received nothing after quite some time. We sought help from another server who was outstanding, and immediately went to investigate with the kitchen. We were told that there was a mixup in the kitchen and our food went to a different table. She ensured our apps arrived within the next 5 minutes. Still, our server had yet to return to our table. Finally, our appetizers arrived (this is now going on 40-45 minutes) and were dropped on the table, no cutlery, no napkins nothing. We, once again, sought out the same helpful server and now complained that this was getting unacceptable. The restaurant was closing in half an hour and we didn’t get a chance to order our actual dinner etc. Again, she was fabulous and brought out the cutlery we needed and napkins. It was ONLY at that point, our server came back to the table and exclaimed “finally! you got your food!” and proceeded to explain that there was an issue with the kitchen and that’s why everything took so long. To be honest, we suspect he never put the order in, but obviously we can’t be sure. He was spoken to by a manager and all of a sudden became attentive. Too little, too late. We then opted to take our mains to go, as we no longer wanted to be in the restaurant. Apparently the manager offered to comp the meals (they never actually came to the table) but we said that wasn’t the point and we wanted to leave. He then brought the takeout and the bill. When my husband did not add a tip, he became full of attitude and actually demanded to know what was so bad, that we weren’t going to leave a tip. He actually argued with us when we said we were not satisfied with the service! As if that was a surprise?? We then gave a tip directly to the server who actually DID help us. The food we got for takeout was under cooked and super disappointing. Honestly, I would hesitate to return here, and I especially would never have that server again. Extremely rude and inattentive. For the record, the apps were very tasty but not enough to give more than two stars here. Disappointed! We visited way better restaurants while here. I would suggest look elsewhere...
Read moreSad to say that this place has gone downhill to the point that I am reviewing this restaurant as I am currently seated at my table. My reservation was for 6:30, the hostess walked us around the whole ground floor of the restaurant before deciding to seat us all the way at the back corner at a high top table despite my request on my reservation to specifically NOT seat us there. I would understand if the restaurant didn’t have any other tables available, but there were many tables that were for 4 people but she did not want to seat us there. When I advised that I requested for a dining table and not high top, she responded “oh I didn’t even read your request” — maybe you shouldn’t say that to your guests. Fast forward to being seated, we waited 26 minutes to be acknowledged by anyone. We stopped one of the other servers in the other section and asked if we had a server and her reply was “oh yes, let me get him.” When they finally gave me and my fiancé water, she spilt it all over our table and didn’t even apologize or give napkins to clean it despite her staring right at the puddle on the table and walking away. Sadly, my birthday dinner was dampened by the service quality. Also sad to say that this was one of my favourite restaurants when coming to Montreal but it might just be my last visit.
Our server checked on us once throughout the time we were there and we had to constantly ask him to refill our water. Mind you, he kept checking in on the other table beside us and when we tried to get his attention, he would walk away.
Dont get me started on my drink. I ordered a Sour and the waiter said “it might take a while, our bar tender is new.” He should speak for himself because his service was horrible — also, why throw your coworker under the bus like that? When I finally got my drink, it tasted like soapy water as if it was not rinsed properly and when I finally got a hold of my server to change it, he questioned me as to why I thought it tasted like soap… I don’t know sir, care to try it? Why would you ask that of your customer. Again, -10/10 for...
