Mariposa Bistro Café — Restaurant in Montreal

I have been a patron, as a diner, music listener and musical community member, of Mariposa Café for the past nine months and feel I finally found the place I've been looking for in Montréal.

Owned by a super talented Montréal musician, Mariposa Café hosts a diverse range of authentic musicians who attract a warm, genuine, multi-generational crowd of music appreciative people.

They offer a wide variety of dishes; even vegetarian. Their small staff are always courteous and patient. The owner, who bartends, has created his own marvellous version of a Cosmopolitan from his eclectic liquor collection (Note: it is blue rather than red).

The atmosphere is subtle and quirky, with local artist's works, for example, paintings by Susan Shulman, and tons of music memorabilia from the owners' personal collection.

I could go on but then the review would be too long for the modern attention span.

I was smitten by the taste of the Mariposa martini. You read right, a novel elixir created by none other than Victor (cafe owner and mixologist extraordinaire). The extensive liquor collection is something that this cafe should be proud of. Now for the 'music', Mariposa is a music den, the best way to enjoy is when music is LIVE. This cafe has such an extensive line up of talent, one needs to check the website frequently.

Ambience, one can easily go from a negative mood to a satisfying mood, by the warm and friendly staff that work there. They really do make you feel like you are part of the Mariposa community. Thank you to Victor, Laure, David and Fiona (peekaboo, I see you over the counter!) See you...

I can't review the food: I didn't get a chance to eat it. But I can review the service. My musician boyfriend made a reservation to see a friend of his play there. The person who took the reservation also knows my boyfriend. We arrived on time to a packed house and were told, in a very off-hand manner, that it was a busy night and that they didn't hold our reservation. They said they'd make room for us, did so, and then another employee promptly gave the seats to someone else. We were highly annoyed and completely unimpressed with the poor service and lack of concern or apologies. I doubt we'll ever go back. Too bad. I was looking forward to the food...
