If I could give 2.5 it would be more accurate, but since the place literally has poutine in the name I think it should be judged a bit more harshly. Lets go through the list: In terms of quantity, you will not be disappointed. The servings are hefty and a large is sure to fill up almost anyone. I would order the small, as they fill the bowl past the brim and it makes for a good medium-sized poutine. The biggest setback of this poutine is the proportioning. There is not nearly enough cheese or sauce. I had not eaten more than a third of the poutine when I had almost no cheese left and just a large bowl of dry fries. There is no layering to speak of, just a heaping mass of fries with no curds among them. The ingredients were not bad, the fries were pretty good, maintained some crunch throughout the poutine, the sauce was tasty but nothing to write home about and the curds were decent, although they didn't melt at all and could have had a bit more tang. As far as taste goes, not bad!
In terms of variety they have a large menu, tons of options that seemed good with some nice twists. They also have a rotation of unique poutines that are only available for a limited time. However, if you can't make a proper classic poutine, no amount of extra toppings can save it from mediocrity.
The decor is nice I guess.
All in all, I would give this poutine a 6/10 if it were some random greasy spoon. But these people are supposed to be specialists and the name of the place is "poutine centrale" therefore I hold them to a higher standard and I give a 5/10 or 2.5 stars. If you are looking for Montreal's best,...
Read moreI came across this place after staying at a friend's place nearby. She recommended that I go to this place if I wanted really good authentic poutine. I am so glad I got the chance to. I stopped by here on a Saturday night. Located in the Hochelaga neighbourhood, you will miss it if you aren't looking carefully.
This place offers a wide variety of different poutines. I tried the small buffalo chicken poutine. It was amazing. The small portion in my opinion was a meal itself. It came out steamy and hot. Fries were thickly cut and smothered in delicious gravy. Cheesecurds seemed fresh as you could hear the squeaky sounds as you devoured every bite. Buffalo chicken was a hit in my books. I also sampled some of my friend's smoked meat poutine, which was equally as good, sweet Montreal smoked meat covered with melted cheesecurds and gravy. This place also serves beer as well, I would have sampled some, but I was too full from the small poutine.
I will say that this place is fairly pricey for a poutine place, for two small poutines, and a soft drink will run you about $25. But I think it is a treat if you go here once in a while. Most of their poutines will average about $8-11 for a small size.
The ambiance itself is pretty modern and laid back. We both sat along the front as people watched as we devoured our poutine. Would recommend stopping by and checking...
Read moreIf you are in the area and are craving a montreal classic (poutine), this is a good place to start. The selection is amazing. The service was fine . The restaurant is well decorated and clean. It's a semi open concept, meaning you can see the cook preparing your food. Which is a good bonus for me. Now for the negative. We did need to wait a little for our food, granted that 8 people went in ahead of us, and we all ordered at the same time. So, I'm not knocking it for that. For some reason, the guy at the front was doubling as a cashier and cook at the same time and worked alone for a while. (We went in close to lunch time. There is no reason for only one employee to be there). Another issue that we experienced was overcooked fries. This issue will usually make a break a poutine, but since the rest of the poutine was well topped and the gravy was food it ended up being passable. I am willing to try this restaurant again to see if the overcooked fries were a result of being flooded...
