Let me start off by saying I don’t think I’ve ever been more scared to get food poisoning from an establishment. Decided to try this place because of all the great reviews, went in and there was quite a few people…we got sat at a filthy old table and were given dirty cups of water. Crusty condiment bottles sitting around….loads of cobwebs and a generally drab feel inside…we ordered and We read one review after sitting down that said take a look at the fryer when you walk in and you will walk right out…. Well, I wish I did that before we ate…what a mess of sloppy disgusting flavourless food. The noodles were overcooked and softer than baby food, slathered in some foul Canadian watered down sauce, I forced myself to try and eat it so I didn’t feel it was a complete waste but couldn’t even finish half my dish. my girlfriends noodles were completely flavourless and the broth tasted of nothing but vinegar. I give an extra virtual star because the people who work there are so nice…but wow I felt sick immediately after leaving and taking a look at that fryer had me feeling even more ill the entire way home. Do not...

Business trip passing by Nanaimo during dinner time so I just searched up Sushi on Google map and this restaurant came up. It doesn’t serve sushi but it does have Ramen, udon, donburi, curry, yakisoba and various Japanese appetizers you’d expect.

I like Ramen so I stopped by. It’s a good sign when you see both customer and owner speak the language of the cuisine the restaurant serves. Not necessarily bad if they don’t, but usually bonus when they do. I’ve had very good Ramen served by Korean in my other review for example.

Back to this restaurant, I’ll just comment on the Ramen. I ordered the Miso Tonkotsu I’ll just say this. I finished the bowl and all the soup. It has odd beans that you don’t normally find in a bowl of Ramen but the soup was flavourful and the noodle was flavourful, the latter is the more difficult one to accomplish without having the soup being too rich or the noodle too soggy.

I would recommend the Ramen and I would come again.

The mini Taiyaki red bean dessert was a...

I ordered take out and specified no green beans in my udon please. I heard the server yell out the order while on the phone call, and it didn't sound like she specified "no green beans." So I made sure to repeat myself because of my severe allergy. I got home and after a few bites, I found green beans at the bottom of the soup. I had to throw away my $19 Udon and take an allergy pill and hope for the best. The take out came out to $60.90 in total. My husband paid $80 in cash and only got $15 in change. So, not only did I pay for food that I'm allergic to (even though I specified twice) she gave herself a tip without asking. Tried to call, but they are not answering. So now I'm leaving a review, and I hope I don't end up with hives or have to go to the hospital. I don't leave reviews often, but food allergies and customer preferences need to be taken seriously. Love the food, but I get the impression they get annoyed with food allergies or...

Wa-Ku Japanese Restaurant has the potential for 5 stars, so here's the reason I gave it 3 stars... The GOOD: Tasty miso ramen and tender pork. Worth the 3 stars. The BAD: The chicken karage was cold and had way too much batter. I couldn't finish it. Also, some pieces were cut in half, which I haven't seen before (see attached photos). The UGLY: As I was waiting to pay, I saw one of the chefs walk out of the kitchen and he vigorously scratched his butt area over his jeans. He was really digging in that area and not being discrete. I then saw this chef go back into the kitchen and continue cooking. He didn't bother to wash his hands. I found this pretty disgusting, which is disappointing because the rest of the restaurant was clean. So, maybe I came to this restaurant on an off night, but I don't think that I'll be returning. This place seems to be a local favorite. I just hope they improve their chicken karage and are more diligent about washing their hands.

Update: I love this restaurant to bits, but this is maybe the second time that Google says "not too busy" and I rush over here after work and it's a 30-minute wait. This is extremely frustrating and disappointing. 😢 I'm not ordinarily a happy person, so the fact that this cozy little restaurant had instantly lifted my spirits says a *lot*! From the cheerful and friendly staff, to the cozy and clean interior, to the delicately prepared, tasty food, I felt like I was almost back in Japan! For my appetizer, I got the deep-fried oysters which were hot and juicy, and for my main course I got the pork belly ramen, which was rich, yet not overwhelming to the senses. From the presentation, to the balance of flavours, everything was simply perfect! Oh, and of course it was a pleasure to speak with Rie—I plan to return many times, to try every single thing you've got! ご馳走様でした〜 🍜😊🩷
