I was looking for somewhere to have some Indian food without having to drive all the way downtown from the west end of Kingston. I’ve gotten gas at Esso a few times and have seen the sign for 1000 Curries, and just always assumed it was a take out only type of place because it’s in a bit of an industrial area.
After a quick google review I saw that it had an “ok” rating so I decided to try it out and they had dine in!
Ok so the location Isn’t glamours , it’s in an old failed truck stop building and it’s the only business operating in their and it’s down a road that’s mostly filled with transports coming off and on the 401 and refuelling, however as a foodie I pride myself of finding those little diamonds in the rough food spots , that only locals know about , the little hole in the wall type places that have amazing food! Well I found one!!
So as you enter the place it’s a cute little space , nothing fancy, and my guess is they do a large portion of their business via takeout and Uber eats, however the tables we big, the chairs were comfy and it was nice to just sit and relax and enjoy AMAZING curries.
Now the front of house girl was sick , so it was literally the chef/part owner taking orders , cooking , handling the phones , etc etc and some ppl may have been annoyed there was a bit of wait but we didn’t mind the guy was doing his best and the food was well worth it, which is why I go places for the food! There’s plenty of places in Kingston yo eat with a beautiful view and the food is cutout of a plastic bag and microwaved by some 18 year old kid.
We tried three Curry dishes , the Madras , vindaloo, butter chicken. A beef chicken and lamb we got 2 nans , 1 roti, and 2 rice dishes.
Honestly the food was phenomenal, the curries were flavour packed and different tasting , there was a nice mix of spicy and non, and the fresh made nan bread was a standout all star. It was fluffy and soft on the inside and slightly crispy on the outside tons of Flavour, also the curries were heavy on the meat and the rice dishes were both amazing , the biryani was spicy which I enjoyed!
Some places you order from the dish is like 90% sauce with a few floating pieces of chicken or beef this was all meat and lots of sauce, good value for the price.
So if you’re looking for a fancy meal with your wife and atmosphere is important this may not be the place , I’m not going to rate them poorly for that , because it’s subjective.
But if you’re looking for a hidden gem off the beaten path for amazing food , and great authentic service , give this...
Read moreOrdered through skip the dishes. It arrived when I expected, though it was not hot when we got it. We ordered that vegetable pakora and it came missing the sauce so ate it dry. The butter naan was so dry it was crumbly, even with sauce. We got butter chicken, lamb Balti, and beef vindaloo... All the dishes tasted the same (like just a tomato sauce with basic spices), and it's not my first time eating Indian food, I know there is a difference. Also, each dish comes with 7-8 pieces of meat for $14-$18 dollars a dish, if you order a meat dish you expect to have not tiny little pieces and a dish of sauce. My total came to over $80, definitely not worth what I paid.
Edit: just read owners response and I can say I definitely reviewed the right place. And even after reviewing I went and read others reviews that weren't so shiny and they had similar experiences. That being said are you sure you responded to the right review? I never said anything about store bought. Owner does not seem to take critiques very well and it's evident in the other responses I've seen. I can definitely say the flavour, the dryness, and the lack of substance is NOT Skip the dishes fault, they simply take food provided and transport to delivery location. You may have been in the culinary business for however many years you said, but I've been successfully consuming food...
Read morePlaced an order for pickup at 5:30pm on Father's Day through the DoorDash website. Took my payment and had no issues placing the order. Arrived at 5:30 to discover a completely abandoned building that appears to have had no active restaurant for some time. We scrambled for an alternative option, and once we got home we contacted the Gananoque location to see if they could explain. We were given the supposed owners number and upon calling her she claimed that it was the fault of DoorDash and that everything was shut down on their end. However, the order was marked as complete which would have the happen on the restaurant end, and this restaurant has to have received our funds which has since cleared through my credit card. We have followed up with DoorDash and they're claiming we need more evidence (oddly taking extensive photo evidence wasn't top of mind when we needed a new dinner plan asap and there were multiple strange men following us around the abandoned building where this restaurant once existed). I have now begun a dispute with my credit card company. This restaurant effectively stole $100 from us and are acting like they have no idea how it happened. Their website is still actively taking orders for this location despite being made aware of this incident 3 days ago - buyer beware, something sketchy is...
