By no ounce of exaggeration, the staff's attitude seemed to be stuck in 18th century racial mentality.
Despite being a Professional Engineer, on one night out with another black friend of mine in town, we got very hostile stares from the staff the minute we walked in, and we both noticed it at the same time and smiled at each other.
We first went into the washroom, and by the time we made back to the bar, we were refused to be served on the accusation that we have been "to another bar before we got here" Basically seeming like an arbitrary made up reason to serve as a tool for discrimination.
Actually they were right! We were in another bar before we got there; we each had two drinks on the previous bar, before we walked in very soberly behaved and calm, and there is no way they should have known (or relevant) that we were in another bar, just being honest with my tale here.
Here is now the big beautiful coincidental surprise that motivated me to write this all up online! Two white guys from the bar we were at just timely walked in as we were walking out (this is a small town, and we were obviously not the only ones bar hoping the night before Halloween), they were loud and very clearly drunk. I clearly recall leaving them at the previous bar, and remembering how we were drunk but cool and having fun...we were understanding of their behavior, they were not harming anyone.
So as we were walking out and they walking in...I shouted to my buddy...wait wait! Noticing an opportunity for clear comparison! Let us see if they are going to be refused service? We waited outside across the street expecting them to come out, and after only few minutes we could see them holding drinks inside the bar!
Honestly! Yup such overt racism does not exist in...
Read moreMy wife and I decided to swing by Poachers on a Saturday night like we used to back in our university days. We were looking forward to a late bite to eat (Korean fried chicken which we occasionally order from the restaurant upstairs from here) and some cold beer, but after speaking to a server to direct us to an available table (“Thanks for the offer but no need to clean a booth, we’ll take the little table that’s already open since there just the two of us.”) we then watched the same server and her colleague server walk past us several times without stopping. After twenty five minutes of sitting there without any service, trying to catch the servers eye, the booth next to us opened up and was immediately taken by new patrons who had just arrived, taking their coats off. A third server we hadn’t even seen yet immediately attended their table, chatted them up, took their order, then ignored our efforts to get her attention and walked away. It had been over half hour by this point and we left. No idea what led to this outright snub by not one, or two, but three servers. We are both well dressed professionals and were stone cold sober when we arrived. Were we too old in our forties for service here? Regardless, we were hungry and unwilling to stay at a place that didn’t want our business. Plaza Sushi a block up the road had outstanding food, service, cold drinks, and great atmosphere. Don’t go to Poachers if you’re over forty and a great...
Read moreThis is my favourite bar in London. Vibes are always great and we always have an awesome time.Table service is not very fast as they clearly need more staff, and food quality is not always consistent, ...but its just a very chill, relaxed and welcoming environment and it is a nice mix of people. Staff are lovely, they just need more of them.
We love going for the No Scrubs Dance Parties, or just a chill drink after going out for dinner or before a concert. Any occasion, it is our go-to spot. Whenever we have friends visiting we take them there and they always love how relaxed and unpretentious it is. We are in our late 30s now but will continue to go here as long as we are welcomed lol.
One thing I think they really need to change though is the practice of not providing a bill when receiving table service. We just receive the machine, but no bill to indicate how much things cost. They used to, so I am not sure what changed.
To anyone re-visiting London, the Korean Fry chicken is gone as it is under new ownership, but the wings are still great if you get the korean inspired flavoured sauce. Though I did get the dry cajun ones and I wouldn't recommend...
