I used to like this restaurant. My mom used to live in Orillia 4 years ago and we frequently ate at this place. But when I came back and tried the food, it's just not the same anymore. Chowmien has too much sauce and a little bland, shanghai noodles are too salty, other chicken with rice tasted like few days old. Broccoli tasted fresh and was nicely cooked. Their poutine was so bad. It was packed and busy with the locals on a Sunday night but most of the other restaurants downtown are already closed so I am not sure if they are there coz they want to or they just didn't have lots of option. We were supposed to go have fish and chips but was already closed so we ended up here. Should have driven a little more. The smell of the restaurant isn't appetizing too. Smells like a very old place, almost moldy.

Haven’t had Royal Oak in over 15 years. I used to enjoy it. We ordered Royal Oak today for lunch, which I had my wife pick up on her way home from work. We ordered 2 of the number 5 combo plates. This has been the ABSOLUTE worst Chinese food I’ve ever had. The chicken balls were shrivelled up, and the chicken fried rice was dry and hard. The bean sprouts seemed to be the freshest thing in the plate. The shrimp batter seemed dry, almost as if it wasn’t fresh, and just reheated. We are wondering if because we ordered on a slow Sunday, did we get busy Saturday nights left overs? Totally unimpressed with the food, and after tasting each item in the plate, I snapped the lid back on and walked away from the table, because it wasn’t good enough to enjoy. Total waste of money. A forever lost customer.

This restaurant is currently take out only. We dropped by pretty late to get some Chinese food on Monday when not much else was open. I have to say, the food is mediocre, however it is inexpensive and the portions are large. In any case, it is one of the places I'm fairly certain I won't come back, even if I'm in the neighborhood.

The staff are generally friendly, but rather inconsistent. We ordered take out from Royal Oak quite often. The last few times the food quality has been very inconsistent, but last night lost our patronage!!! I normally order extra gravy with shrimp foo Yong, I ask for gravy on, and a side of gravy, and the result is all over the map. Last night instead of trying to get them to understand, I just said very clearly "I WANT A LARGE GRAVY ON THE SIDE". I received very little extra gravy on top. I've ordered extra shrimp several times, I'm always asked how many? I say 6 "EXTRA" shrimp, (on my shrimp foo yong). Last time I ordered it with 6 extra shrimp, there were 8 shrimp total (I counted because the previous times I ordered 6 extra shrimp, it didn't seem like there were very many shrimp for being ordered with 6 extra shrimp. Who normally puts 2 shrimp in shrimp foo Yong?

Last night I decided to have fun food, I ordered spring rolls, breaded lemon shrimp, chicken wings, and the Shrimp foo Yong, and "lots of extra plum sauce. I said, "I don't mind paying extra if I need too". The spring rolls were good (as usual) but I had no (extra gravy) to dip them in. They seem to average 3 packs of plumb sauce with an order like this, Last night there were 4, my willingness to pay for extra plumb sauce, got me one extra plumb sauce. First I ate the breaded lemon shrimp which were almost cold, tough/chewy, and not fun food to eat, and that's where I ran out of plumb sauce! Next I had the chicken wings, yukkkk. Horrible, dried out, way overcooked, stringy, almost unbeatable, tough, and not fun food to eat at all. Finally I had the shrimp foo Yong. Not enough gravy (for my taste), and I think I saw 3 shrimp, I didn't really count because I've decided to fire them as my go to restaurant for take out. Last night was the straw that broke the proverbial camel's back. Royal Oak, enough is enough, YOU'RE FIRED, WE'LL NEVER EAT OR ORDER FROM...
