So happy to discover this authentic Thai restaurant in Durham! I love Thai food but I always find myself traveling further west for something to my liking. I saw Ayothaya's Facebook ad around dinner time yesterday (perfect ad timing I must say) and immediately decided to grab dinner from here.
I ordered takeout through their website, which is easy to navigate and better than having to pay for surcharge on UberEats. I ordered my go-to dishes to gauge my liking: Khao Soi, Pad Ga Prao and Thai milk tea. Food was ready within 15 mins of ordering, and they offer a discount if you pay by cash. I didn't dine in, but I picked up my food from inside and I can say the interior is quite small, but feels very cozy.
Khao Soi was a great portion, the curry was very fragrant and the flavour profile was layered and delightful; it's savory and sweet and tangy but nothing overpowered the other. The noodles were cooked to the perfect doneness, and even though I had takeout, the noodles didn't get caked together and separated easily. I ordered regular spiciness for both dishes, it was a level of spiciness I can handle but probably the most I would do for an enjoyable meal.
Pad Ga Prao was absolutely delicious, I love the significant sweetness to the dish that wasn't overwhelming but balanced out the heat. The rice absorbed all the flavours from the meat and I could eat double the amount of rice with the sauce!
Milk tea was amazing as well, you can really taste the flavour of the tea! The only thing that surprised me was that it came in a bowl instead of a cup? I poured it into my glass to enjoy, not a hassle just thought it was quite unique lol
Overall an amazing dinner, I can't wait to order again and try the different dishes, especially the durian...
Read more5/5 stars! I went here with two others and we ordered the papaya salad to share. Didn’t grab a pic but it was plated nicely, had a good amount of spice to it, refreshing taste, and loved the crunchy texture.
I had the khao soi noodle soup with chicken. Chicken was falling off the bone, lots of vegetables, tasty coconut broth. I asked for medium and felt it was more on the mild side so would dial it up if you’re into spice. A couple drawbacks on this dish were that the fried noodles were stale, chicken skin was soggy, and I personally wasn’t a huge fan of the amount of raw red onion that was in the dish. I’d probably order something else next time but this would be 10/10 with a couple small modifications.
Notably, none of the dishes we ordered were laden with oil, which is sadly all too common for thai food here in Canada.
Our server was one of the most friendly servers I’ve ever had. She was very attentive from the very beginning and apologized a couple times for the “wait”. I believe we were in and out in less than an hour, and food was served steaming hot!! We weren’t waiting around at all. We also requested the A/C to be turned on and she quickly responded to turn it on and shared that she had a complaint earlier that it was too cold and that’s why it was off. This place really caters to their customers and she didn’t make us feel like it was a nuisance in any way.
Dinner rush makes this a really busy place with lots of takeout orders. Lots of parking available in the plaza. This is a quaint spot with great food, and definitely...
Read moreVisited Ayothaya for an early dinner and enjoyed four very authentic Thai dishes - we ordered the papaya salad (spicy) to start and then the penang chicken curry (a bit on the sweet side but still delicious), steam rice and pad see ew for the mains. The flavours were aromatic and very authentic. Special mention goes out to the green papaya salad that had the right balance of spicy, savoury and sweet - a must try dish.
For dessert we got the mango sticky rice which comes with half a ripe manago over sticky rice and a savory/sweet coconut milk sauce. We all liked the dessert but all the rice made it a bit heavy as the close out to an awesome meal. Though don't let that stop you from trying the dessert.
Service was pleasant and the food was served at the right pace - we were a table of three.
The one area that the restaurant falls down on us atmosphere - the heating in the restaurant was non-existent and they had to add two space heaters in the center of the room to warm patrons up. Given how busy the restaurant is for dine-in and pick-up the doors are constantly opened and shut - so there is no chance of the restaurant warming up if the heating is left low or not put on. This definitely affects the overall dining experience and would be the only area the place falls down on.
I recommend this restaurant for an authentic Thai...
