I’ve been going to the Lone Star since they opened their first restaurant in Ottawa 35+ years ago. Back then it was a really good experience.
Later, they started to get greedy, trying to nickel and dime us in various ways - while the prices kept rising.
Once, they decided to stop giving away the chips & salsa when you sat down. They'd offer them, but for a charge. That didn’t last, as it annoyed a lot of people. Then they said the charge would go to charity. I don’t think that went over well either. They eventually did away with that, and went back to giving them out. It’s good when a mistake is corrected, so we forgave them.
Then they went from saying “¼ pound”, "½ pound", or "1 pound" of meat to “Uno“, “Dos”, or “Texas” - no longer claiming an actual weight. I have watched the amount of meat dwindle over the years.
One day they tried the game again, making guacamole an extra-charge item. Guacamole is a critical ingredient to fajitas, and this was just a money grab. It must’ve annoyed many people, as they backed down on that one after a while and again included one small container with an order. The “fixin’s“ were unlimited, but that no longer included guacamole.
We went yesterday for an anniversary dinner. I was shocked to see the game was on once more! Guacamole is again an extra cost add on. It was still included at our last visit. I should note that the prices have also gone up since we last went by about 10%. I dislike price increases, but these days I can understand them. I just don’t however understand the little "scams" they keep pulling. Part way into the meal I realized there were no beans. I reminded the waitress, but she informed me that fajitas no longer include beans. She was sympathetic and said that she could bring me some, but I was almost finished eating by then.
So in addition to about a 10% price increase over a few months, they're no longer giving guacamole or beans. Both staples at their restaurant for many years, and arguably critical components to fajitas.
Over the years I've been willing to line up there. 35 years ago the lineup would be right outside the door, every night. There are no more lineups. Last night the restaurant was 85% empty.
I’m afraid I’ve had enough of this game - pulling out something that used to be included, while increasing the prices.
We used to visit regularly. We were happy to line up for a fair amount of food, and it was always good. Sometimes we'd wait for an hour or more. It was worth it. Now we see a dwindling restaurant desperately trying tricks to get another $1.49 while giving you as little as possible. It’s really too bad.
What was once a pound of steak fajitas now costs $83 - without guacamole or beans! I don’t believe that the price of skirt steak has gone up that much, yet they charge $12 more for the steak than for the chicken. When you pay that much money, you should get everything you used to, and not be nickel and dimed for essential sides. Will they charge for hot sauce, salt and pepper next?
I’ve had good service, bad service, mistakes, and lots of really good experiences - as can be expected from any restaurant. I've been quite forgiving, and kept going back. We supported them during the pandemic, for birthdays, anniversaries - and just everyday Tex-Mex cravings.
It’s this lack of integrity now that has now pushed us over the edge. We have been going a bit less, but I’m afraid this time was our last visit.
I suspect that they're never going to see those long lineups again. The current owners probably don’t even know what it was like years ago, and just how popular a really good restaurant could be. But they’re getting that important $1.49 for guacamole now, and probably saving another 47 cents on the beans to make up for it, and willing to lose their reputation.
It’s been a good run, but in this modern world, I guess good things no...
Read moreWe attempted to set a reservation on line but the site indicated we had to call the location. I called the Carling location to be put on the "Call Ahead List" and was informed by "Nashville" they didn't do that. I indicated that that was popular complaint on their website that they advertised a "Call Ahead List" but they didn't really offer it. She transferred me to the manager and he explained that I needed to call an hour before and not the 2 hours to be put on the list of there was one. I called back 1 hour before we were wanting a time and "Lasso" indicated there was a list, but that I could not be put on the list and they couldn't guarantee me a spot when I arrived. She asked how far away I was calling from and I told her 40 minutes. I also informed them I was not only coming from out of Ottawa, but I was meeting another couple there. She said to call back on my way in when I was 20 minutes away. I attempted to explain to her what the manager has informed me to do and asked if I would like to speak to the manager again. I declined and said I would take my chances when arriving but wouldn't be happy if I had to wait. I arrived and gave my name and number in my party. She proceeded to put me on the waiting list of about 6-8 others. I asked if she was "Lasso" and she said she was not. I informed her I would like to speak with the manager when we were seated. Delightfully to my surprise the Hostess asked if we had called earlier to arrange to be put on the list and I said yes. She said she was waiting for us, had put our name on the list and that the manager was waiting to speak with us. The manager greeted us at the table and apologized for the confusion that "Nashville" had gone home ill and that he had it taken care of.
I want to state I was fearing the worst, but they did a great job in covering from what seems to be a poor system for a "Call Ahead List". I would give them a 5 star for taste of food and atmosphere certainly. The prices have gone up significantly in the past 5 years to over double what it was. This is our family's favourite outing and we used to go weekly nearly every Friday or Saturday in the year as the value was great. We now only go every 8-12 weeks or so as the price has forced us to experience other establishments. Price of meal was $165 for 2 beers, 2 soft drinks and 2 orders of Fajitas. we used to have this exact same meal 5 years ago for under $75. Let me stress that the flavour of the food and fajita shells are second to...
