Vimy Brewing Co. in Ottawa was launched by 2 former Canadian Forces members who named it in honour of the singular victory at Vimy Ridge in France during WWI by the Canadian Corps. When all previous allied efforts to take the ridge had failed, the 4 Canadian divisions, fighting together for the first time under Canadian leadership, prevailed.
The bar is frequented by former forces members quietly reminiscing about their service and enjoying the smooth, quality brews. It is also a unique location as every year in early Summer, the close protection unit of the Military Police do a VIP escort exercise that culminates in action at the bar! Patrons are warned ahead of time.
Two of the standout beers are the Red Ale and the NEIPA.
The red ale is smooth, light, well rounded, and has an underlying mild sweetness to it instead of being malt forward as is characteristic of this style.
The NEIPA is gloriously redolent of grapefruit and citrus scents, and the flavour continues in the sip. In keeping with the ethos of the brewery, the hazy brew is well-balanced and delicious.

Read moreVimy Brewing is cool. There are currently three beers available all the time. The cream ale is really good, nice and drinkable: it tastes like "another one", as they say. What I appreciate about Vimy is how non-hipster it is: it's just a place that makes solid, straightforward beers. No reclaimed barnboard on the walls, no mason jar light fixtures, no fancy stuff. Just a couple nice guys making beer you can enjoy in their large taproom, or in their comfy lounge, which has a bunch of board games. Solid....
