HELmut (cook) + NAtasha (dining room manager) = HELNA'S.
I have been coming fairly regularly to the Radium area ever since I was a small child. One tradition I have is that I always stop by and eat German food for dinner. I have done this at the old restaurant located on the main highway as you enter Radium each time until tonight.
This time, one of the locals recommended that I come to Helna's instead. I came with my family and had an incredible experience!
The staff were so friendly and patient with my two young (elementary school aged) boys. They would listen intently to what they had to say and would even continue the conversation to discover more of their thoughts. My boys lit up at how important it made them feel to be addressed directly like that.
The food was so amazing that we took a veritable tour of many of their dishes! We couldn't stop eating! LOL
We started off with two of their amazing soups, the French Onion Soup and the Goulash. They came out quickly and were PIPING HOT 🔥 which warmed us up like a big hug 🫂. That got everyone settled down and relaxed for a wonderful evening.
Then the Caesar salad and Baked Brie came out and everyone dug in together and shared with delight.
The meals came out and were each a HIT with all of us. They all looked and tasted so great that we all shared with each other (a true family dinner)!
We rarely order dessert at other restaurants but enjoyed the authentic atmosphere, food and friendly service so much that we had to see the huge list of temptations that they have here. The children each received Ice-cream with a Hazelnut/chocolate sauce on top (yummy) and then we all shared Apple Strudel and Crème Brulé. That paired with a delightful Latte at the end was a the perfect way to end an incredible meal!
Helna's has been open for 23 years and I finally tried it out. It WILL NOT TAKE ME 23 YEARS TO COME BACK!!! I will be making this my new GO TO SPOT for my German food craving stop...
Read moreWow, Where do I even begin. Me and my girlfriend have been touring through Canada for the past 2 weeks, this was the worst restaurant experience we encountered in Canada, and not far from the worst restaurant experience we ever had either.
First of all, the place is so pompous and Covid 19 paranoid. You need to agree to a specific protocol when entering, and the whole feeling inside makes you feel like a peasant (explained below).
My girlfriend asked the waiter for a recommendation on the steak's level of cooking, he didn't give any recommendation and instead asked us if we ever had steak before (ok, a little weird but whatever).
We got the buffalo mozzarella starter and it was extremely small, one tomato with a few pieces of mozzarella.
My girlfriends steak was well done although she asked for medium well, and a small part of it was also completely burnt. My ribs were all over the place, most were well done and some were medium well, although I also asked for medium well.
The food was ok, nothing special.
Before we left, the owner / hostess asked us if everything was good, and I told her about the burnt part of the steak. She called the chef over and left us alone with him, and when we explained what was wrong he implied that we are wrong about the cooking level and just said we should have said something about the burnt part of the steak. The owner / hostess than came over to charge us and continued saying that we should have said something about the burnt steak. The reason we didn't say anything was because it was just a part of the steak, and our experience was bad so we didn't want to stay there any longer than needed.
In conclusion, we had way better food for way less money, the entire staff and feeling in the restaurant is pompous, and they are so paranoid about Covid you get the feeling that it's the start of...
Read moreMy wife and I were on a weekend trip to celebrate our wedding anniversary, and we couldn't have asked for a better evening out than dinner at Helna's Stube.
Our server was perfect - engaged, friendly, entertaining, but never pushy, never over-attentive. He clearly knows his business and is very good at what he does. The food was absolutely superb. I had escargot - a favourite - for the first time in a very long time, and it was perfect. I had become used to expecting lemon on the side, so I was surprised when I didn't see it, but understood the moment I ate the first one: the chef had already added the perfect amount. My wife's garlic cream soup was delicately flavoured and also perfectly seasoned. For mains, my wife ordered the ravioli and was thrilled with the creamy texture, rich flavour, and again perfectly cooked and spiced spinach. My own beef roulade was a taste of heaven - perfectly seared, tender, and so flavourful. The cabbage that came with it was delicious and tangy, and the spatzle was al dente and delicious with the cream sauce for the roulade. We shared an apple strudel for dessert, which was beautifulyl balanced and delightflly, delicately crispy on the outside. It was the perfect end to an amazing meal.
The service was fantastic, the precautions in place made us feel safe in eating in the restaurant, and though the bill was a good size, it was well worth the price for the experience and the food.
Vegetarian options are limited but decent. No getting stuck with mac & cheese or a...
