First time dining at Moxies. Upon entering we were very impressed with the atmosphere. There is a dining area, a lounge with bar restricted to patrons of legal drinking age, and lovely enclosed patio area with glass walls and heating so it looks like it can be used year round. The hostess at the front was friendly and pleasant.
Unfortunately the rest of the dining experience did not meet expectations. First off there were items unavailable such as calamari and all pasta dishes. We had intended to order calamari & shrimp as an appetizer and pasta as a main based off the online menu but was disappointed it was not an option. In addition, dishes were overly salty it overpowered all other flavours. We had to keep asking for water to counteract the salt.
We ordered: NACHOS $27 - this dish was good, large portion, not overly salty
MUSHROOM SIRLOIN STEAK $41 - specifically requested NO SALT on my steak and less salt on my veggie sides so thankfully it was edible but the mushroom sauce was way too salty. Had to scrape it off to the side so I could enjoy my meal
BLKN MAHI MAHI $35.50 - this is on the salty side but edible
CUP CLAM CHOWDER $11.50 - Very little clam. Mostly potato, some bacon. Thankfully got a cup instead of a bowl because again, it was so salty.
CHICKEN WINGS $19.75 - honey garlic flavour. Crispy, not dry but again too salty.
LOADED BURGER $24.50 - mediocre. Again too salty. Came with a side of Ceasar salad which had basically salt dressing, like it was doused in salt water and then drenched with more salt. We let our waiter know and she offered to replace it so we got sweet potato fries instead which was edible.
Service was slow. Our server offered to bring us a brownie for dessert, dropped off some plates and dessert spoons and then disappeared for a while. The brownie was brought to our table from someone that looks like a manager about 20-30min later who apologized that they have no ice cream which normally comes with the dessert.
Maybe this level of service and lack of regular items like pasta, calamari and ice cream is not the norm but given it was our first time dining at a Moxies, it was not the best first impression. It’s unlikely we will be visiting any Moxie location again...
Read moreMy memory of Moxies is from 10 years ago when it was unrefined, outdated, and a bit tacky to be brutally honest. I moved away for 7 years, fast forward 10 years, I decided to reluctantly try it again due to my australian husband wanting to check it out. I was shocked! Moxies seemed practically rebranded with a great (competitive) menu to go with. I now have 2 small children and the hostesses were absolutely lovely and accommodating and went out of their way to print more of the unicorn paper my daughter loves to colour when they ran out. I've noticed that of our 3 visits with 3 different servers, they never write down their orders, which is a big no-no for me (as a former GM and my husband being a double GM at the moment) and lo and behold, our first two visits, service lacked a bit and orders were forgotten and they didn't notify their managers or rectify it. Not the end of the world, but it dampens the experience. Tonight, however, was excellent. Our server remembered everything; he was accommodating, friendly, two-bite checks ✔️, checked in regularly without overdoing it, forgot a small mise when our mains arrived, but delivered them himself so that was fixed asap. He inquired about our little family celebration of me having a new job and offered a little dessert on the way out. And he was conscious that we had our kids with us (you'd be shocked at how many servers put down drinks and steak knives right in front of our baby). He was efficient and effective. I don't recall his name, but he had curly hair I believe, with a section near the back end of the dining room. I had a steak salad with tenderloin (YUM) with a Cotes du Rhones, my husband had a steak, my kids had chicken fingers and a pizza. The food was beautiful, and dessert was a guilty pleasure. Thank you for our evening - both service and food. From beginning to end. Hostesses, server, and bussers were excellent. It's not always a good time when you bring your small children out, it's always a bit risky, but tonight was...
Read moreI visited the Moxies Bar and Grill in Richmond Hill for a company Xmas dinner. Our group was seated in the heated and enclosed patio area. There were a team of dedicated servers helping our table. The server was knowledgeable with the wine list and provided her recommendations for white wine. I ended up ordering the Kim Crawford Sauvignon blanc. It was dry white wine with some fruity notes. I'm not a big wine drinker but I really enjoyed it.
We had a set menu which included a small appetizer soup or caesar salad. I ordered the coconut chicken soup and it was a delight. The soup was definitely Thai influenced and the bamboo shoots, chicken and coconut was a perfect medley of ingredients. It was almost like a green curry. We also ordered beef nachos, crispy calamari and goat cheese and bread dip. All the appetizers were pretty good no complaints here. I ordered the Chipotle mango chicken based on my positive experience before. I must say the dish was really good but the one I had in Moxies Pickering was outstanding. The chicken lacked the deep grill charred marks and was not piping hot. Usually the plates are really hot when they are brought out. The plate was only warm to the touch. The bite of white chocolate brownie was decadent and was great finale for our meal. I ordered a cappuccino to cap off the meal.
One critique would be the lack of refilling the waters on our table. The restaurant definitely had an attractive crowd and people were happy and enjoying their drinks and food. It was a little bit difficult to talk inside as the sound insulation in the patio was poor.
Overall, the service was pretty attentive and friendly. I would recommend making a reservation if you are coming in a large group. Thank you Moxies for...
