Car's Desserts
WHERE are they?: 8888 Odin Crescent 2270 Richmond BC A little out of the way but well worth it! But lots of great places are like that. It's like the signature of a Master's place! People will go and find them no matter what if they're good!
Lots of parking. Park up stairs is better, unless you like the exercise. My pictures show the BLUE staircase that leads into the food court. If you don't see any blue metal staircase you're in the wrong area! Head in and they're in the left corner. Cash only!
WHAT'S so fab about it?: Remember the movie Shaolin Soccer? The girl who was making the buns put her whole heart into her work... and later her tears... but the buns were perfectly tasty! And so ...
Jacky the owner of Car's Desserts is a master dessert maker. " I myself am also a consumer. I want to put into what I myself also would expect in good quality food. I want people to enjoy it. The test is if my customers are happy then I'm on the right path."
Jacky showed himself to be not only a master in satisfying the palate but also has fantastic customer service ! He gave us an extra box of 4 Mochis just because he didn't like the look of some of the Mochis that tipped over from a previous packer! (That being said the lady who served us earlier has a super personality that poured into her excellent people skills. Probably Jacky's wife!) He cares that much about his work ! As I said earlier
What's the secret of making great desserts? His heart and soul goes into his work. He definitely knows how to feed the customer's body , soul and spirit!
BREAK: Why the 'Car's ' in Car's Desserts Jacky? "Carmen is my wife's name and Carson is my son's name. " Ah I see ...CAR's Desserts. Super cool !
Resume..... His Mochis are very soft and also perfectly tasty. My Japanese friend ,who knows her food and is also a super dessert maker , said "It's not easy making very soft Mochis and Jacky's Mochis are definitely very high class in comparison to others made in Vancouver ." Very tasty indeed ! Make sure you bring some good Chinese Lychee tea with you to enjoy with these desserts...or HK style coffee or milk tea !
A lot of places that make Mochi or other 'Asian' type desserts make it look super attractive but they always end up as being overrated as far as quality goes.
These are we got from Car's Desserts: Aromatic Durian Mochi Fresh Mango with cream Mochi Hawaiian Purple Yam Mochi Rich Chestnut Mochi Purple Yam Taro Sago Cream
WHAT'S so fab about it 2: I love the 'Hong Kong street style' look of their place!! My Japanese friend Is goOoooing back and bringing this up to her friends...so don't miss out!
You won't be...
Read more$$$ CASH ONLY $$$ Cars dessert is a well known dessert spot in the Richmond area even though it’s located in a food court of a low key strip mall where you wouldn’t expect such a place. I think they are most known for their mochi and mango desserts. I went late in the afternoon and they were so sold out of most their stuff and so I only got to try the mango dessert. Definitely recommend going around when they open to try the best stuff.
Food My group tried the black sesame baked tapioca, mango pudding, and another one I don’t know the name for unfortunately. The mango pudding was my favorite of the 3 though and would recommend. The mango pudding was not very sweet actually and had a good mango flavor to it. All the desserts actually were not that sweet. The black sesame pie was interesting since I have not had a dessert like that before. Hopefully next time I can try the mochi and see what the hype is all about!
Atmosphere The store is located inside the food court of a strip mall on the second floor. It can be a little challenging to find if it’s your first time but make sure to locate the food court! Look towards the large window and there you will see Cars dessert. Casual and laid back atmosphere with people talking all around.
Pricing Prices were reasonable and worth the price. Not too expensive for a dessert.
Service The staff was helpful and nice. Food came out as soon as possible since the baked pie required heating (~15...
Read moreThe Mango Sago Pomelo Cream was not sweet at all; it was diluted with water so you could not really taste the cream. The Durian Baked Sago Pudding was tasteless - you could not taste the durian and the sago pudding was sago in a mango pudding that was diluted with water as well. It was not the authentic one in dim sum restaurants where the sago was mixed with custard. The tofu in the Tofu Pudding was good, but the sugar syrup was not sweet at all even though it looked dark brown. So why was it brown? Only the mochi was good - the durian, chestnut, and purple yam were strong flavoured. But they merely put two chunks of mango for the mango mochi with minimal cream (it did not look like the pictures here) . It looked like they tried to save labour. Also, the mochi skin was chewy. We were shocked with the inferior quality of desserts. The good reviews were probably written by their relatives and friends.
P.S. When we asked for utensils, the woman there hesitated and she only gave us one spoon and one fork while we bought so much. Moreover, she told us that we needed to eat the mochi asap but the other food could wait. It did not make sense because usually the wet food (e.g. tofu pudding, mango sago pomelo cream) cannot wait while the dry food (e.g....
