Hong Kong Flavor Restaurant
Address: 104-10151 No.3 Road, Richmond, BC V7A 4R6
Food
Cream Soup and Luosong Soup The meal began with two soups: cream soup and luosong soup. While both were warm and comforting, they offered nothing beyond what one might expect from similar Hong Kong-style cafes. The flavors were passable but lacked depth or distinctiveness, making them feel generic. A decent start, but ultimately forgettable. Rating: 5/10
Baked Seafood Rice This dish was a major disappointment. The rice lacked the richness typically associated with baked seafood dishes, and the flavors were bland and uninspired. The seafood components failed to shine, leaving the dish tasting flat. It’s a dish that neither satisfies nor warrants a recommendation. Rating: 2/10
Hot Plate (Three Items) The hot plate featured AAA New York sirloin, gillette fish fillet, and pork skewers. The steak, paired with a well-executed peppercorn sauce, was the highlight of the dish. Unfortunately, the remaining elements fell far short. The fish fillet, though generously sized, was bland and lacked seasoning, while the pork skewers were unremarkable in both flavor and texture. This dish showed promise but ultimately failed to deliver consistency. Rating: 6/10
Ambiance
The ambiance is functional but lacks character. While the space is clean and organized, it feels generic and uninspired, offering little to enhance the dining experience. The setting is sufficient for a quick meal but does not contribute to a memorable outing. Rating: 5/10
Service
Service was the most disappointing aspect of the visit. A 30-minute wait for dishes, coupled with a lack of communication from the staff, set a poor tone for the experience. Overhearing a waitress admit that the food wasn’t ready only added to the frustration. When the dishes finally arrived, there was no acknowledgment of the delay or apology, leaving a sour impression. The service felt indifferent and inattentive, significantly detracting from the overall experience. Rating: 1/10
Price
The prices are on the higher side, which would be acceptable if the food and service matched the cost. Unfortunately, given the lackluster quality of the dishes and the subpar service, the pricing feels unjustified.
Verdict
Hong Kong Flavor Restaurant struggles to meet even basic expectations. While some dishes, like the steak, show potential, the overall execution falls flat. Combined with poor service and unremarkable ambiance, the experience leaves much to be desired. For the price, diners deserve far better in terms of both food quality and hospitality. It’s unlikely I will return without significant...
Read moreI learned about this hidden gem from my uncle, who's a bit of a foodie in the Richmond area. Since many HK style diners have closed down (due to real estate buyouts, or COVID19 in general), it's tough to find a decent place for milk tea and classic baked dishes. HK flavour is relatively new to the block (2 years since open), but already a favourite among HK locals.
From the entrance you can tell management are doing their best in these pandemic times; plenty of bilingual signage and notices, tables set up 2m apart, servers all wear masks & gloves. Cudos to the manager - he's very attentive and courteous, and puts in a lot of effort to wipe down and sanitize seats and tables, making sure customers feel safe and comfortable. They even set up a centralized "take out table" for quick and easy pick up orders.
Now for the food; it is good! My family went yesterday around noon, specifically for their lunch menu. We tried the Thai Chicken Fried Rice, the Baked Pork Loin Rice, and the Spicy Sausage Tomato Spaghetti. All have their own unique flavour. I could tell the chefs put some heart into the dishes; from the special mix of herbs they use to marinate the pork, to the slight sprinkle of Japanese seasoning on the rice, and also use of real fresh corn (not canned).
Other things worth mentioning: Milk tea is not bad, and will satisfy your craving. Service is good, especially the manager at the front. Prices are a bit above average (~$13/meal with drink), but for the quality you get, it is acceptable during these trying times. The washrooms are clean; 3 private stalls with one centralized hand washing station. I really like this design, as you'd only expect to find it in higher end restaurants.
A final word: I live out in Coquitlam, and I frequented this cafe twice in the past month. That said, if gas prices keep rising, and more traffic as restrictions lift, I may need to limit my drives out. However, if you're in the area, and you like HK style foods, I would tell you to give this place a visit.
PS. I heard their HK style curry is quite tasty too....
Read moreI had read some mixed reviews on this new Hong Kong style restaurant so I tried to keep an open mind about it. From the reviews, I expected to wait a while and boy was I right. We put our name down on the whiteboard in front and sat down waiting to be called. After around 15 minutes we were seated which is not bad. Honestly though I saw a lot of empty tables that were not occupied, but they just didn't have enough time to seat people. They tend to seat people in bunches instead of when tables become free so the turnover isn't fast enough. We ordered the baked spaghetti Bolognese (a staple we always order) and flavour wise it was heavy on the ketchup but lacked quantity. At most HK style restaurants you expect it to be piled high with noodles and covered in sauce. The house sandwich was average. There was a bit too much lettuce to my liking but a good amount of bacon. If it had a little more sauce it would have been better. The French fries were like every other HK style restaurants French fries, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The French toast was surprisingly good. It was crisp on the outside but not too oily. The inside was fluffy and went well with the butter and syrup. The milk tea was not great. It lacked tea flavour and had too much milk in it. Very unfortunate. The lemon tea tasted like Nestea. We were overall pretty satisfied up to this point, but we were still missing one dish and it was the noodles with XO sauce. We asked about our order twice and were told they would check on it. Finally they gave us an explanation that there was only one Chinese chef for all the Chinese food orders so they were slightly backed up. When it came out it was piping hot, really flavourful and probably one of the better dishes of the day. My advice, if you have time to wait try some of the Chinese dishes, if not order the western influenced dishes. The overall atmosphere was not bad. Very clean because it's still very new and the service was pretty good even though slightly delayed. Be prepared to wait if you are...
