Recent review: We bought six types of Chinese pastries:
Wife pastry - thick skin with tasteless filling 2. Preserved Egg - there was no pink ginger inside as in the past and the preserved egg was one big chewy piece 3. Date paste - bitter 4. Walnut Pineapple - minimal sweetness 5. Taro - tasteless 6. Red bean - minimal sweetness.
These pastries were supposed to be sweet. However, there was no sugar in the pastries (most of them were tasteless). We were shocked by the inferior quality because they were famous for these pastries. The pastries were better in the past.
Review: This review is for the mousse cake. I ordered a 8" pumpkin mousse cake. The woman on the phone laughed at me when I asked her about the cakes were like. What was so funny when customers wanted to know more about the cakes (since they are expensive)? They were discouraging customers from asking questions. Also, I asked for a few Asian flavours (e.g. green tea) and they said they were not able to make them. They told me the fall flavour, pumpkin, was available. So I had that instead. She said a few times that she needed to ask the pastry chef but she did not go and ask. So I needed to ask her to ask the pastry chef for me. Did she want my business or not?
At the end, she asked me for the earliest time that I could pick up the cake. When I told her 1pm, she said, 'We might be able to have the cake ready by then." What do you mean? Will the cake be ready by then or not? The employee was confusing with a condescending tone. When we went to pick up the cake, another server came to take our cake away and moved it back and forth for some reason while our server was making the cake box. The employees should be very careful with the cakes.
For the cake, the pumpkin mousse was not a mousse; it was cream and the pumpkin taste was light. Shockingly, they put canned pumpkin puree in the middle of the cake which caused the water to leak through the sponge cake layer underneath the puree (which was moist) onto the cardboard. No one would do that for any pumpkin desserts unless you want to ruin the desserts. It created a mess for us. Also, they put stale thyme as garnish on the cream which made the cake look weird and gross (the thyme were partially black). In addition, they used mini Golden Oreo cookies as garnish which were...
Read moreThe quality at this bakery is great! I ordered the red bean pastry with egg yolk and the pineapple coconut bun.
The red bean pastry is filled with sweet red bean baste which balanced with the slight saltiness and creamy texture of the egg yolk. The egg yolk isn’t hard and overly salty like those in the supermarket mooncakes. However, I felt like the egg yolk was too small and the crust wasn’t sweet at all? You have to bite both the crust and the paste in order to get the maximum flavour. The pastry is quite expensive at $3 a piece.
The pineapple coconut bun was AMAZING!! This place sells gorgeous, massive buns at a reasonable price and the bread texture is amazing. The crust is sweet and crunchy while the bread inside is soft. They do not skimp out on the filling at all and every bite of the bun was packed with delicious coconut flavour. Absolutely recommend to those who love coconut.
An additional point I would like to add is that the selection of breads at this place is rather plain. I wasn’t able to find any particularly new or interesting pastries here, but you can certainly find high-quality typical Asian bakery items here. I want to visit them again to try their red bean sesame balls, wife cakes, and red bean pineapple buns ☺️
Overall, I am happy with the quality at this bakery and I would recommend stopping by if you are ever...
Read moreRegardless of what you may want to think about this Bakery, the fact is it's world famous. You could walk around with their bags and eventually you'll hear someone recognize it.
So what people from out of town do is they show up here before they leave, buy boxes and boxes of whatever their favourite item is to bring back home to share with friends and family, and they wistfully think about the people who live here and just come by on the regular.
If you need a suggestion, request the Wintermelon Pastry. Top shelf, and nothing quite like it anywhere else. They'll pack them into these wonderfully beautiful red boxes, and they're just good for anyone to try. Flaky, light, perfect Wintermelon consistency. I don't quite know how, but it's highly unlikely you'll find one where you live that's made like this.
Since you're physically in there, just make a round through the space and pick out whatever suits your mood. They're all freshly...
