I’m so happy to wander off from Richmond Public Market and bumped into this matcha cafe! The same brand I tried when I was in Honolulu~ Lineup was short when I was there around 12:30pm on a Saturday, probably still too early while everyone was still at lunch. There was still a bit of a wait because the making of the soft serve parfaits take time and I can see their staff are diligently attending to every order, so I didn’t mind the short wait. I ordered their Maiko Special with green soft serve without red bean. On the day, they ran out of chestnuts, so they offer to sub it with other toppings. Which I found that is very kind of them cos usually places ran out of certain ingredients would just opt out instead offering something else. On top of that, I asked to not add red bean as my personal preference, they also insist I choose another topping to sub for the red bean. I was impressed with their service! Very rare to see they offer to sub, cos mostly at other places, if a customer voluntarily ask to opt out certain ingredients that would be it and no sub allow, especially in most Asian restaurants. So here at the small little Japanese front staffed matcha cafe, I’m very happy with their customer service level, truly reminded me of Japan! In terms of the taste, the green tea soft serve was on the mild side, probably custom to western taste bud, but with the extra green tea powder on top, that boost the green tea flavor much more! So if you love green tea, ask for extra green tea powder on top to intensify your dessert! My Maiko Special has dark sugar syrup at the bottom giving a dense sweet flavor to the plain corn flakes that only gives crunch to my dessert, which I found the combo is absolutely perfect! In the middle, it has green tea powdered spins cake that is on the dry side meant to scoop with the green tea soft serve to give a light sweet texture of both dry and wet. I found this Maiko Special not only has a solid green tea flavor but also has multi layers of textures in my mouth that every bite can be so different and delicious at the same time! Plus, there are green tea gelatin, technically a crunchier more solid kind of jelly and chewy mochi balls added in the mix, is just amazing! I love every bite of my cup of $12 Maiko Special! Yes, the Maiko Special is $12, so prepare to savor the flavor but beat the heat that melts your soft serve! I would definitely try out their coming soon items later in the summer~

Came at around 2pm on a Tuesday and there was no line, which was nice. Passed by last Friday though and the line was out the door, but it moved quickly enough. Seating is pretty limited to two tables and a couple of benches, but the nearby park offers ample seating too when the weather is nice. Maiko’s just a couple of blocks from the Skytrain station, in a more secluded area right behind the public market (past Miniso and the halal restaurant on Saba Rd.), but there is street parking available as well. They don’t have the shaved ice at the moment, so menu is currently limited to their silky soft serve, lattes, floats, and the Maiko Special parfait which has a variety of familiar and unusual toppings (but at $12 is heads above the rest of their menu). Had the mix soft serve and found it pretty alright. Green tea flavour was smooth and more mellow than other places, which may disappoint matcha enthusiasts who want to really taste those grassy, slightly bitter matcha notes. As far as soft serve goes though, it’s still solid and you can get a variety of toppings like kinako (soybean flour), chestnuts, matcha powder, and even shiromochi to accompany your soft serve. The waffle cone itself was bomb as well - crispy, light, and even has cake pieces at the bottom so your soft serve doesn’t leak out. Would definitely come back and try their drinks out before passing judgement but I like what I had and wouldn’t mind coming out of my way to get my matcha fix. For commuters, it’s a lot more convenient than going to Tsujiri near Walmart.

I had matcha soft serve ice cream and matcha parfait in Hawaii. They were so delicious. I am very happy that Richmond has this matcha shop locally, so I don't need to travel all the way to eat the 'good' matcha ice cream in the states. Here they just had a grand opening. Surprisingly the line up was not extremely long like the new bubble tea places. I lined up and bought the desserts quickly. I ordered a matcha soft serve ice cream and a hojicha latte float. Both tasted great that i loved the match flavour so much. The quality was the same as the one that I had in Hawaii. However, the waffle cone of the matcha soft serve was extremely big. I was not sure if the shop did it on purpose. The proportion of the waffle cone did not match the one of the soft serve ice cream. The one that I had in Hawaii had a right size of the waffle cone along with the ice cream. The hojicha latte float had the matcha soft service ice cream on top as well, but the ice cream was leaning towards one side, which was collapsing that its presentation did not look great at all. If the shop could improve on the presentation of the food, that would be perfect! There is street parking. Some areas may be free; some may need to be paid; and you can also park at Westminster Public Market. If it is a busy time, it is difficult and pain in the butt to drive into the public market parking lot, so you may want to park on the street or further (not in the public marketing parking lot) and walk to the shop.
